Easy sleep tracking from Samsung SleepSense

One of the coolest apps for the iPhone 3G was a sleep tracker. You ran the app, placed your phone on your bed while you slept, and it used the phone’s novel accelerometer to track how much you tossed and turned. It was a bit awkward to use – your phone had to be charging all night, the screen needed to be on and facing down – but the sleep graphs it produced were awesome looking (and occasionally informative). Seven years later, and Samsung are releasing the final form of sleep tracking: a sleep sensor that rests in your bed permanently, tracking your sleep patterns and delivering the results to your smartphone without requiring you to keep your phone in bed or a wearable on your person. This is Samsung SleepSense.

Samsung SleepSense Contactless Sleep Monitoring SystemSleepSense is placed under your mattress, where it can track your sleep without being obtrusive. Each morning that you’ve slept with the SleepSense in place, you’ll receive a personalised sleep score and recommendations to improve it via the Samsung SleepSenseĀ app on iOS and Android. The app dispenses advice from a Harvard Medical School Professor, Dr. Christos Mantzoros, and covers topics like lifestyle, diet and exercise. You’ll receive customised advice, just like you would from a real doctor.

As well as offering stats and advice on getting a better night’s sleep, the SleepSense also gives you a much better start to the day than an abrupt alarm. The SleepSense software figures out the best time to wake you based on your historic sleep patterns, waking you gradually at the perfect time to ensure that you feel fresh and energised in the morning.

The SleepSense app can also interact with other Samsung smart objects; for example it can turn on the air conditioning while you sleep or turn off the TV once you fall asleep. All SmartThings smart appliances can be controlled this way, and with many new ones coming out this is a strong investment for the future.

Reports will be delivered via email, letting you keep tabs on their sleeping and giving you the tools you need to try and improve things. This is good for older and younger members of the family alike.
