When you think of great technological innovators, Pizza Hut doesn’t often come to mind. But this week, Pizza Hut in Hong Kong and ad company Ogilvy and Mather HK captured imaginations with their Blockbuster Box, which is a pizza box and projector combined.
The design is surprisingly slick. You’ll get your pizza delivery as usual; open up the box and you’ll find your pizza, ready to eat as always. But the pizza protector – that little three-legged plastic thing in the middle that makes sure your pizza isn’t crushed – has a little lens on top. Take that off, and stick it through a perforated hole on the side, and you’ll have the workings of your projector.
Then all you need to get going is something to watch on YouTube or Netflix; get it playing and then place your phone on top of the upturned pizza protector in the box. The screen will shine through the lens, projecting it onto the wall. And if you don’t have anything to watch, you even scan a QR code on the box to play one of four pizza-themed videos from Pizza Hut themselves.
It’s pretty amazing stuff, really. I mean, it probably won’t be very bright, or high quality, and you’ll probably need a Bluetooth speaker to make the sound actually audible… but it’s still awesome.
The Blockbuster Box is only available in Hong Kong, and Pizza Hut aren’t expected to release this worldwide. If you’d like to try something similar in the UK though, you can – we have the Portable Cinema Smartphone Projector, which works on the same principles (but doesn’t include a pizza!)
