Don’t buy a flagship Windows Phone. Not yet, anyway – the next one is coming soon. It’s going to be called the Lumia 940 – and it has a bigger brother too, the Lumia 940 XL. Here’s what you need to know about these upcoming Microsoft Lumia phones.
Design
The Lumia 940 and 940 XL will be slim and made with an aluminium frame. We should see a familiar style as previous Lumia models, but there will be a few unique details here too.
One of these will be the connector, which is changing from micro USB to USB Type C. This connector offers reversible, bi-directional charging, finally surpassing Apple’s Lightning connector.
Another will be the display, which should come at a new high resolution for Windows phones: 2560 x 1440. The 940 will have a 5.2-inch screen, while the Lumia 940 XL will have a larger 5.7-inch screen.
Hardware
Internally, the Lumia 940 and its larger sibling will be impressive. Both phones should come with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage (with a micro SD slot for expansion). The 940 XL is rumoured to come with a Snapdragon 810 octa-core processor, while the 940 will use a slightly less powerful Snapdragon 808 hexa-core processor.
In terms of cameras, we’re expecting a 20-megapixel shooter on the rear, and a 5-megapixel unit up front for selfies and video calls. The front-facing camera may also integrate an iris scanner, presumably for security and login purposes.
Software
The 940 and 940 XL are likely to be the first phones to ship with Windows 10, the upcoming release from Microsoft.
The desktop version of Windows 10 is expected to ship on July 29th, with the phone version coming later in the year. An official announcement of the 940 and 940 XL could well happen around that date.
