With the eKit iOS connection kit, you get an all-in-one box that lets you hook up your iPhone or iPad to things you never thought possible. Here’s what you can do:
- you can watch movies, videos and YouTube on your TV
- you can listen to your music on your speaker system
- you can copy photos and videos to or from SD cards and USB drives
Let’s have a look at each one of these, starting with the first point – watching movies on your TV. This works by connecting your iOS device to your TV using RCA cables (red, white, yellow). Once these are in place, what you see on your screen you should also see on your TV. Then, it’s just a case of playing your movie, TV show or YouTube as normal.
One important thing to note is that you won’t get an HD signal from this cable. If you want to watch movies and other content in HD, you’ll need an HDMI adapter for the iPad or iPhone. If you don’t mind or you’re watching standard definition content anyway, then this will work just fine.
Next up is music. This is pretty simple – just connect the white and red RCA cables into your stereo, then play your music or other audio as normal. The sound will come out of your speakers once they’re set to the right input. This is useful if your stereo doesn’t have a 3.5 mm stereo input (which is quite common for older stereo systems).
Finally, perhaps the most useful ability granted by the eKit: you can transfer files, including photos and videos, between your iOS device and a USB stick or SD card. This is great for looking at photos you’ve taken with a digital camera on your iPad. It’s also useful for transferring photos and videos you’ve taken with your iPhone back onto your PC.
So there you have it. The eKit will work with all iOS devices using the older Apple 30 Pin connector, including the iPhone 4S and 4 and the iPad (1st, 2nd and 3rd generation models).
