Official Nexus 6P cases can cause screenshot issues

nexus6padoptedGoogle have turned to some new partners to create official cases for the Nexus 6P. One of these partners is Adopted, who created a stylish microfibre case for the Google handset. Sadly, Android Police is reporting that this case has an annoying flaw: it’s really difficult to take screenshots when the case is worn.

Let’s explain. The case includes little plastic covers for the phone’s buttons, intended to provide a complete seal against the elements while still allowing the buttons to be pressed easily. That’s useful, but when you go to take a screenshot by pressing Volume Down and Power, the Volume Up button in the middle is also pressed down by the case. That blocks the screenshot from being taken, and instead launches a bug report screen. That’s super annoying, and some users have ended up taking a knife to the case in order to regain the ability to take screenshots.

If you don’t take screenshots often, this flaw isn’t the end of the world, but it has the potential to be very annoying for anyone that does use that particular feature often. If you’re rooted, then the Xposed module Advanced Power Menu+ will add a screenshot command to your power menu… but this seems a long workaround if you’re not already rooted. A better alternative may be pressing down a little above the power button, so that there’s less force applied to the Volume Up button.

Of course, there are plenty of Nexus 6P cases that don’t have this issue. In particular, any case that has a cutout instead of a cover for the volume buttons won’t be affected. Button covers that are separate the volume keys into two distinct buttons should also work.
