King of Smartwatches
New Samsung very Smartwatch
Good watch
Frontier - the next level
The only downside is I feel its a little on the big side. Apart from that its super easy to get used to and customise although it would be good to see more apps added in future.
I liked the sleep monitor feature as well as the gps tracking.
Making calls were a bit hit and miss but that could just be my signal.
The screen is amazing and I love the fact that I can change the face depending on my mood and make it look like an amazing timepiece.
Battery life is good and quick to charge also.
Would it be the best Smart watch on the market?
Let’s start with the benefits. For me (engineer working at heights), the best function is a built-in speaker and microphone. I don’t have to reach for my phone to receive or make a call. Great! It can be very handy whilst driving as well. The same with notifications, messages, email etc. Reminders, calendar and other similar feature known from smartphone are good but you will still mostly set up your reminders and appointments on the phone. It’s just easier on the bigger screen, but notifications popping up on your wrist are a good thing.
There are certain aspects of the phone you can control via the watch like sound level, music and video. Additionally you can control the camera via the 3rd party app and probably much more I didn’t discovered yet. Not bad.
I like to be gently waken up by the vibrating watch with no sound whatsoever. If you need a little bit more, then full volume will wake up most of the people.
I don’t really us all the things like weather widget, news feed etc. but they are there if you need them.
I’m enjoying using S Health app. It automatically recognises your activity, constantly monitoring your heart rate and movement. It takes few minutes to recognise the “workout” and it’s not always accurate but gives you a new perspective on how active you are. Nice bonus of this new “smart” technology. It will even remind you to get up and stretch when you seating steady for too long. It automatically tracks your sleep patterns and can be paired with the mobile apps to get even more insight in to your night.
To Aps then. I didn’t install many aps or widgets so far but you can find anything from new watch faces, through aps from various categories like: finance, lifestyle, social networking, entertainment, utilities, etc. ending with the games. Yes! You can play games on it!
Having said that, the choice is not grate at the moment. There are tens, maybe hundreds of apps, some free some paid, but it’s still early days for smartwatches. More will definitely come in the future.
Design wise – it is a good-looking watch. I’ve been testing the Classic version and I have to say it’s not my personal style. It looks very good, shiny, with the leather strap etc. Definitely good choice for the office type person or someone with more classic approach to the life;). For all of you outdoor, active type, the Frontier would be a better choice although it’s all about you. Take what you like.
It’s strong, solid watch, not too big and not to small either, but wouldn’t be comfortable and wouldn’t look good on very small hand. The screen is fantastic in my opinion. Very clear, crisp and bright. There are only two buttons and most of the stuff you do via touch screen, which could be set to be super sensitive so you can operate it with your gloves!
The battery lasts 2-3 days, depends how you use it, which is not bad for smart watch. Still inconvenience to take it off and put it on charge for few hours every two days or so.
All in all, it’s a very nice watch. Hardware wise, it’s a solid, well build watch with very good screen. Most of the software features are very good and will be handy for busy person, especially techy one. If you are not in to the technology, this is probably not for you.
A smartwatch to lead them all
Good but flawed !.
One negative is that you have to use Samsung's preloaded phone apps such as messenger, mail, etc. if you want to synchronise between your phone/watch.. so you can't use outlook, textra, hangouts, gmail etc.
The screen is nice and clear, and its a nice looking watch. Its well-built but after owning it for a month the bezel is already becoming very loose so not sure if it will last long. BUT my biggest problem with it is I'm not sure what it's point is (for me at least) and how I'm really going to use it. I could do everything it does from my S7 smartphone, so could only recommend it to people who want the most up to date technology.
Love love love it
The apps are simple and useful, the notifications subtle (an orange dot where the "9" would normally be on the watch face) and the battery lasts me nearly a week between charges (although I do switch it off at night) . The rotating outer rim to switch through relevant screens is a great design feature, and adds to the pleasing aesthetics of the product.
I cannot recommend this watch highly enough, I've even bought a new Samsung phone to go with it as I was so impressed with the Samsung quality.
Like a normal watch but smart
The Gear S3 Classic brings the style of a classic analogue watch combined with the added smart features of its competition. There are plenty of options to customise the watch face to your liking. I find the more traditional faces really set this watch apart and with the ability to keep the screen on all the time it can easily be mistaken for a normal watch. It is a fairly chunky device which while fitting fine to my wrist, it looks completely out of place when my wife tried it out. The battery life is very impressive and I can typically get just over two days from it with the screen on all the time.
The phone comes with a limited set of apps pre-installed. The S Health apps are brilliant, in particular the ability to track walks and runs is brilliant. After a workout you get a nice overview of the route you've done, including your heart rate, speed and elevation. Unfortunately the watch runs on Samsung's OS so lacks the ability to install Android Wear apps which means you are limited to a fairly poor set of custom apps at the moment.
Overall I am very happy with the watch and would highly recommend the watch.
Beautiful watch, stunning design, wish it was running Android Wear
The GOOD:
Looks gorgeous
Very comfortable
Always on Screen is subtle and fantastic quality
The bezel is a nice innovation
The emergency alert triple button press is a very nice idea.
The BAD:
Closed Tizen firmware does not integrate with phone as well as Android Wear
Limited Apps available through the Gear Marketplace
Bezel can get spun accidentally quite easily
Voice control is lackluster
The AWESOME:
Did I mention it looks amazing
Build Quality is Top Notch
THE best Android smart watch on the market right now!
Fantastic
I love how easy it is to toogle through the various screens and how easy the apps are to use. I am guessing like most things new there wI'll be more apps available in time as they are limited at the moment. By using the outside ring of the watches face you smoothly move through the screens until you find the screen or the app your are looking for tap the screen and it opens its that easy. Battery life is 4 days and Ive never had a problem with this, I ware the watch 24/7 with the exception of when I shower in the morning to get ready for work, I use this as top up time. At work we are not allowed phones on our person so using Bluetooth I am able to stay in contact with everything that's going on. I have had no contact issues while using Bluetooth.
Style With Functionality
A classic analogue watch face with a ticking second hand hides the fact that underneath lies a piece of high-tech that will satisfy most
smartwatch enthusiasts. A variety of digital watch faces can be downloaded with many of them being free.
Some of the features are a Bluetooth and Wi-fi connections to your mobile phone or other devices, which expands the range of features the watch has onboard. Messages can be read with a reply sent and calls can be answered through the watch itself with ease through the speaker & microphone. Built in GPS will keep track of your activities so you can leave your phone somewhere safe while you run, climb, cycle or even go for a swim as it's waterproof.
One app that's free and made for the Gear S3 is the SHealth app. Various features of the app will help you maintain or attain a fitter you.
The S3 comes with two different sized watch straps which will fit the watch itself to any wrist size within reason.
Using the features on the watch are easy to get to grips with as the controls are only two buttons and the bezel itself. Battery life is excellent as with average use you should have up to four days worth of power. With 4GB of Flash memory to store any music with or opt for something a little different, I love to to listen to audio books.
One drawback is that some people find the size of the watch face is a little large but if it was any smaller one would have to take more time to focus on the screen and it might also be a disadvantage to those of us who wear glasses or contact lenses.
Overall this Samsung Gear S3 Classic is a fantastic watch with amazing tech and oodles of features and apps to keep the majority of smartwatch fanciers extra happy.
Over all I think it a great bit of kit. It's easy to use and looks good at the same time.
I have broken other watches before, but so far this has survived all I have (mostly accidently) thrown at it. You can but tempered glass screen protectors for the Gear 3 which, for me, would be good.
First time I tried to pair the watch with my phone I had a nightmare (almost giving up), I tried it the next morning, connected first time and has stayed connected since. The face can be analogue or digital and has a sensor, turning on when turned up but will stay 'off' if it is held other ways, to saving battery life but has not always worked. There is an always on setting but on more complicated faces it uses the battery up quickly.
You can look at alerts and reply to messages on the watch it self. It acts as a hands free device of phone calls, great for in the car. The most usefully app for me has been ‘find my phone’.
Good attempt!
I don't know what I was worried about!
The first thing that strikes you is the design; yes it has some of the bulk that comes as par for the course with wearable tech, but it is surprisingly slim in comparison to other models that I have owned. I did consider – does the rubber strap cheapen the look? After wearing it for a while, it becomes apparent that it is a high quality piece of kit from bezel to buckle.
The second item of note is functionality. If you have never owned a smartwatch, you will get on great with this. For me, there was some re-education required as I had to change my behaviours in order to get the the best out of it, for example setting a new verbal wakeup command, or ensuring that I customised my own alerts. This aside, the native OS does a grand job of responding to voice commands. My only bugbear is that I can't seem to get it to send message via Whatsapp as they only go via SMS.
The screen is outstandingly crisp and clear and extremely responsive, but not to the point of annoyance. Having the software responding to the moving bezel is also a genius stroke as it means that you can quickly scroll up and down messages or between apps and settings.
The app selection is OK, with choices being pretty much restricted to the Gear Store as far as I can tell, but there are some fun games and useful tools there; as I was driving home recently I was notified of an accident en route and was then able to verbally request navigation home to avoid the delays, something which would not have been possible with a smart phone.
To close, and the highest compliment that I can give, I expected to wear the watch for a day or two and then give up as I was so used to using wearables in a slightly different way. Nearly a month on and I'm still wearing it daily. Good job, Samsung!
Excellent Smart watch lacking google integration
Best All-Round Smartwatch
The aforementioned hardware is simply stunning, and makes the most sense within the traditional confines of what a "watch" has meant to us over the generations. This means a circular display, and combined with a rotating bezel that is a far more naturalistic way to navigate settings than a rotating "digital crown", it's easy enough to customise the S3 to your like (although, as with any product, there is always some fiddling around at the beginning).
The watch strap provided is a simple but elegant black leather variant, and Samsung have made it easy to swap it out for any standard 22mm strap. I've tried it myself with old watch straps, and it's wonderful way to transform the entire look and feel of the S3 Classic.
Battery life is possibly the biggest area where the S3 excels. It has averaged 3.5 days of usage, and that's getting to the point where the Battery Saver mode hasn't actually activated yet. In other words, if you're going on a weekend away, you shouldn't need to take another charger with you - even if the magnetic dock Samsung have provided is marvellously easy to use.
Software is the one obvious area that needs work: there are simply not many apps available for the Gear S3. Plenty of watch faces, yes - but not apps. This needs urgent work but in complete fairness, the way I use a smartwatch means that this absence of apps doesn't make a big difference.
The main areas a smartwatch needs to excel in:
- Does it look good?
- Can you change the watch strap easily?
- Can you get 3 days of battery life?
- Is the software fast and fluid?
- Does it connect to your phone reliably?
- Does it free your from your phone?
- Is the health and fitness aspect useful?
- Are there a variety of apps easily available?
Every one of these - apart from the final one - gets a resounding 'Yes'. You are no longer tied to your phone - you can receive notifications, reply, take calls (which works really well). S Health will motivate you to move more. It looks great, the battery life is exemplary, and it has a premium feel. Get more apps out, and it would receive a perfect score.
It's a keeper.
Perfect Watch, Lacking App Store
The Perfect Smartwatch
With a simple turn of the bezel, I have my calendar up or I'm controlling my music without touching my phone. Fitness tracking is accurate and simple. Even the ability to take calls on the watch is simple with quite a loud in built speaker. Battery life is good.
It has some amazing features. I particularly like the many watch faces I can use and the fact it tells me when I haven't been active enough.
PERFECT Smartwatch. Recommend to anyone and everyone.
Don't lose hope in smartwatches, especially if you haven't tried this one.
Great leap forward
So not only does the Gear S3 Classic look awesome on my wrist, it also has up to 4 days of battery life, which I can say is accurate.
It just feels premium and using the dial to select apps is ingenious.
Only gripe is I don't think the Samsung S Voice is very accurate when using to make calls or text. Hopefully this will improve. I also hope more android apps will have gear s3 support!
However, this device is absolutely brilliant!
Very Good
First off, The watch had a good size face, it also is only lit when the watch senses that it has been brought up to be viewed by the owner.
The watch is very responsive and works seamlessly with my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
The number of apps is limited, however there are some well known apps such as Spotify available.
You can answer calls and texts on the watch, you simply turn the bezel one way or the other to either answer or reject the call.
I found that the battery lasts for 2 days with moderate use with battery life being around 30% after the second day.
The standard strap that the watch comes with is useful and allows the watch to be snug and not move around when worn. However after long periods of wearing it, it can become uncomfortable.
Pictures can be sent to the watch and stored there.
Overall I would recommend the watch despite the price.
The perfect Campanion
I used to have asus zenwatch 2 which was upgraded from the original Gear (The very first one with tizen) the software since the first one has matured and with the round bezel control it feels like a natural interaction.
The exercise measuring is up there with most of the fitness focused wearable devices like Fitbit and it looks stunning.
I have used a few watches in the past (Original Gear, Asus zen1, Asus zen2, Pebble Round, Apple Watch) but none of them has had so many heads turn around to say nice watch and when I tell them it’s Samsung smart watch they are presently surprised as they are not used to good looking smart watches which is what Samsung has achieved with the great software in tizen which makes human interaction very natural and also works with iOS (You can answer calls as well which Android wear can’t do). One other thing I appreciate is the fact you don’t need to have a Samsung to get the best experience of the watch (Even with iOS you can install some of the apps) any android phone would give you the full-fledged Samsung gear experience.
The only fault I found with the watch is with S-Voice and it can’t blame the watch for that as its not matured enough to understand the Indian accent
the best feature I love is the auto detection of exercise mode . It even pick up I am swimming with is great. I have tried using it while playing cricket and it was able to detect it has light sports activity which is nice to see rather than one common activity track record.
It also gives me the option to count the amount of water intake which is build into S-Heath which reduces one more stand alone app entry.
I Love the colour always on screen... No other watch in the market can do that ... no other and to add the seconds ticker makes it look real high end (Which it is )
Best Smartwatch I have had till date.
Perfect Accessory
Useless features outweigh useful
Turning the dial brings up 'widgets' which you can customise. To give you an idea of what you can choose: there's an alarm widget, weather widget, shortcut of upto 4 favourite contacts widget where you can directly dial your favourite from the watch, breaking news widget, calender, step counter, floor counter, heart beat widget, music player widget etc etc.
---------------------------
Useful vs Useless:
Many features I found on this watch were useless unfortunately. Although in concept it sounds great on paper, many features just aren't useful. For the gallery app, you basically have to choose a selection of photos to send to the watch which is stored on the watch memory. Same with music, don't assume because you have loads of tracks on your phone that you can listen to them all on the watch - its only what you send over via bluetooth. This to me is pointless, because I'm hardly ever without my phone and if I didn't have my phone with me then I wouldn't be dying to look at photos on my watch or listen to music from my wrist. Mind you the sound quality wasn't too bad but realistically, for the person who just can't do without listening to music, I'm sure they would rather stick headphones in their ears and not have music from a tiny speaker on the wrist.
The news real as a widget is nice, but really..is it useful? I know I like to stay up-to-date with news but I'm not that into it that I need to be constantly updated with whats going on in the world.
You can answer and make calls from your contacts on the watch. I liked the favourite contact widget where with one tap you're dialling and speaking - but you'd think it all sounds useful.. but really is it? Assume you're cycling to work and your phones in your bag, and you're expecting an urgent call then the watch is useful because it vibrates and tells you whose ringing and obviously from the watch you can answer the call and talk. But if you're outside cycling, its likely going to be a lot of background noise and so answering a call from your wrist and talking and listening to the call from the wrist is just not practical. You'd rather just get your phone out of the bag and hold your phone to your ear. Same, if you go to the gym, if you leave the phone in the locker and go on the treadmill, yes it's useful for the watch to vibrate and tell you whose ringing, but would I really want to talk with someone on 'loudspeaker' - no. Generally if you hold the phone on loudspeaker then you can control background noise to a degree but with a call on your wrist I'm not so sure the call would be faultless with a hand moving around.
Everyone is exercise conscious these days so I did enjoy some features, the step counter of how many steps you've done in a day and if you've hit your target was handy - but then again my Samsung S7 already does this for me already, and I'm not sure which is more accurate because the results from both devices even if they were both with me all day would be a little different. Another one was a widget to count how much coffee vs water you've drank, how many floors you've climbed etc. I did find the sleep tracker good. Keeping the watch on all night, you can wake up in the morning and look at your phone to track how efficient your sleep was by looking at the times you were moving around and restless.
The full month calendar view was helpful as well as the reminders widget. I'm still in two minds about the heart beat tracker which measures your heart beat maybe every hour (the back of the watch surface shines a green light to your wrist so your unconsciously having your heart beat measured periodically.) Maybe its good to know this but when I look at the phone to analyse the results etc I'm not sure what I'm actually getting from knowing that my heart beat reading is slightly high or slightly low- its not like its measuring my blood pressure.
The ability to change watch faces was great at first but the novelty does slowly wear thin. The buzz of 'o which face shall I have today' or 'how'm I feeling today' sounds great but the number of places you can download new faces is so limited that its awful. Free faces which looked stylish were hard to come by, and the paid versions aren't all that much better either. I did like one feature with the inbuilt Samsung faces where the faces with smaller dials could be changed to show sunset time/battery life/weather/moon etc and could even change if wanted to change the from either white or black. I'm not sure if others would agree but still, for some reason the faces even though they would replicate say a TAG Heuer watch, would just look fake and artificial on the screen. Even on photos, the watch face that's shown on advertisements makes the watch look so cool but in reality it doesn't resemble that premium look at all. I would advise before buying this watch to go in store and just see whether its your cup of tea.
Other things that came on the watch were messages app, email app, spotify, calculator and some others. There were a few games but it just felt silly playing a game on your wrist instead of pulling out my phone. For some of the apps like sleep/step counter etc to be synced with your phone was helpful as well as being able to view battery life, storage, RAM. One other feature on the phone app was Find my gear - you click the button on the phone and the watch would scream out loud but how often would you really misplace an expensive watch ?!
The watch comes with its own operating system not as well known as apple or android, and it did crash twice over the past 2 months. As theres no on/off button, you end up pressing things to restart it with a lot of frustration!
Contents in box: Watch, 2 straps (large and small), wireless charger and plug
Build quality: Its solid and sturdy. Doesn't feel cheap at all. 2 thick rugged straps are provided, small and large. With either of the straps you'll find plenty of holes and definitely find a size to fit you. There are 2 rubber clasps also which help stop the strap coming undone.
Wireless charger: I've never used a wireless charger before, the charger acts a bit like a magnet- when your near the charger it sucks into place when you're close to it. Typically takes a few hours to get to 100% charge.
Battery life: Using the watch just like an ordinary watch without using any apps besides the alarm gives you 3 days worth but I noticed even if I used the watches features then it'd still be about 3 days worth. When its connected to your phone you get to monitor battery life on the phone app - I found this accurate.
Conclusion: Samsung has pioneered many many things in the tech industry and this was a great attempt. I'm not sure how much of an improvement this watch is compared to the S2. There are a variety of things you can do with this watch but the useless features outweigh the useful. In general though, the useful features can be found on things like a fitbit for a fraction of the cost of this watch - but if you just want to look cool and don't mind paying the extra money for a 'different' gadget then go for it. With the hefty price tag and lack of apps this isn't worth it. (of which I'm not sure what more you'd want to demand from a watch - may this could be the start of streaming sky sports on a watch ;) ?!??!)
Would I buy this?
If I won the lottery.. yes and thats so I can say I'm not bog standard and I have a 'Samsung watch'! But not at this price. If you do buy this, just weigh up if you'd actually make use out of the features or whether it'd just be better spending the money on a better phone.
