In this short guide, we’ll show you to get started.

1. Motorola’s preferred option is Chromecast

Motorola’s official help page lists Chromecast as their recommended option for streaming video to your TV. Insert the HDMI dongle into your TV, then set it up following the on-screen instructions. You’ll need to install the Google Home app from the Play Store, if it’s not already installed.

Once you’re set up, just visit Settings > Display > Cast to mirror your screen, or press the Cast button in supported apps including Netflix, BT Sports and YouTube. You can find a list of supported apps on the Wikipedia page List of apps with Google Cast support.

2. Miracast is your only alternative, but it’s not easy

Miracast is another option for many Android phones, allowing you to cast to the wide range of smart TVs that support the standard. However, it isn’t officially supported on the Moto G5S.

There are reports that you can enable it on the Moto G5S if your phone is rooted though; just add the lines below to your build.prop file using an app like Root Explorer and reboot your phone.

persist.debug.wfd.enable=1
persist.sys.wfd.virtual=1

From there, connect to your TV using Wi-Fi Direct (Settings > WiFi > Advanced) then visit Settings > Display > Cast. Press the three dots button then tap Enable Wireless Display and select your TV.

Be aware that editing the build.prop file can damage your phone, so look at a full tutorial and proceed with caution — we’re not responsible for any damage!

3. Sadly, HDMI adapters aren’t supported

Some Android phones can be connected directly to TVs using an HDMI adapter, often called a SlimPort or MHL adapter. Unfortunately, this was most popular a few years ago, and many Android phone makers have stopped including this functionality in their phones (although new phones with USB-C have benefited from widely available USB-C Display Adapters). Sadly, the Moto G5S doesn’t include support for a wired connection.

Wrapping up

So there we have it — all we know about connecting the Moto G5S and Moto G5S Plus to your TV!
