The Galaxy Note 6. These phones… are no more. For Samsung has decided to combine the two models, and align its new release to have the same number as the Galaxy S7. That means the next flagship phone from Samsung will be the Galaxy Note 7.

It’s a move that makes a lot of sense. There was a significant furore over the company’s decision to not ship the Note 5 in Europe, instead shipping the stylus-less Galaxy S6 Edge+, and a lot of confusion over the simultaneous release of the Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ elsewhere. This way, there’s one number to remember this year, and one phone to choose if you want a big Galaxy flagship.

The Note 7 is ‘expected to enter production in July’, according to ET News via The Verge. The phone will have the same curved edges on the front and the back, making for a symmetric and (hopefully) ergonomic new handset design. The July production date suggests we may see an earlier release this year as well, in step with the accelerated release of the Galaxy S7. The Note traditionally goes up against the new iPhone in September, and releasing in August would definitely give the Korean chaebol a bit of breathing room… and having the Note on the same number as the iPhone 7 makes a lot of sense too.

What do you think of Samsung’s move to skip the Note 6 and proceed right ahead with the Note 7?
