Some early rumours have suggested that Apple will abandon their tick-tock release schedule, debuting a phone that looks pretty much the same as the iPhone 6 and 6S but doesn’t have a 3.5mm headphone jack. However, there’s little joy in that outlook; let’s look at another possibility that’s altogether more interesting.

According to Storm.mg, the next iPhone will come with a digital home button, making the entire face of the phone flush. That will look pretty cool, as it removes the last moving component on the iPhone’s face, and it could also make it easier to make the iPhone 7 waterproof, another oft-repeated rumour.

However, you can’t just replace the home button with a software button and get the same experience; you’re losing out on the tactile feedback that a physical button provides. In order to assuage that loss, the rumour suggests Apple will use haptic feedback motors, like that of the Retina MacBook’s Force Touch trackpad, to provide a button press sensation.

It’s not clear how Touch ID will work, but presumably any potential system would include that functionality.

Furthermore, the report suggests that Apple will move to a matte black colour for the chassis of the iPhone which could produce an impressively monolithic-looking iPhone from which little light escapes.

Other iPhone 7 rumours still on the table include a dual-camera system (at least on some models) and redesigned antenna lines on the back.

Normally we’ll see a raft of leaks in the runup to the traditional September announcement, with oft-leaked features generally becoming part of the eventual official reveal. It’ll be interesting to see if this particular rumour has legs.

What do you think?
