Even with all of the smart appliances I’ve been lusting over recently \u2014 kettles, fridges, washing machines \u2014 I didn’t expect to add mirrors to the list. That all changed when I stumbled across Google engineer Max Braun’s bathroom mirror, which is amazing and fantastic and damn I want one.<\/p>\n

The mirror is powered by an Amazon Fire Stick\u00a0running Android, allowing Max to see Google Now cards \u2014 including the weather, time, date and news headlines. Thanks to a display board tucked between the\u00a0two-way mirror and the medicine cabinet door, you’re left with a perfectly futuristic screen that shows useful information without unduly obscuring your handsome physique. There’s even a voice search feature, allowing the Google dev to bring up new cards to answer questions and settle bathroom-based disputes.<\/p>\n

Max also posted a look at what’s hiding behind the cabinet door, showing a Fire TV stick running a custom Android APK, a board that converts the HDMI output of the stick to something usable by the display, some LEDs and buttons, and quite a few wires of various kinds.\u00a0It’s a little messy behind the mirror, but hey! \u2014 it’s only a prototype.<\/p>\n

So far Max hasn’t posted the full breakdown of what he’s done, as he keeps refining the system, but he has promised to do that in the future. Hopefully we’ll see that come out soon, as I’m sure many-a-geek would like to replicate his feat on their own mirror.<\/p>\n
