As well as sharing photos of a cool-looking phone, he also gave a fully illustrated set of instructions on how to achieve exactly the same look on your iPhone 6 / 6 Plus.

n.b. Following these instructions can lead to damaging your iPhone. Only proceed if you know what you’re doing. We’re not responsible for any damage caused to your iPhone by these instructions or any others. You can find some additional instructions here. Good luck!

First, you’ll need some materials. Banjer is using an ‘Apple logo LED kit’ purchased on Ebay; dozens of similar examples exist. These should come with the LED logo itself, a means of connecting it to the backlight fuse, and the tools that you need in order to take apart the iPhone to install it.

Once your order has arrived, you can get started. The instructions are complex, but here’s the short version so you can get an idea of what’s involved.

Remove the pentalobe screws from the bottom of the phone, then use a suction cup and plastic wedge to remove the screen assembly. Disconnect the battery to ensure you don’t get shocked and to minimise the potential for damage. Then remove the EMI Shield and disconnect the screen assembly. Remove the battery, scrape off the original Apple logo, and you’re ready to install the replacement.

Place the replacement logo using the same adhesive Apple originally used. Connect the replacement logo’s cable to the LED backlight fuse, and secure with electrical tape. Reconnect the screen assembly, reinstall the EMI shield, reconnect the battery, and replace the screen assembly. If all goes well, you should see the Apple logo light up when you turn on the iPhone.

n.b. This mod cannot be performed as easily on the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, as these iPhones have a water-resistant seal inside. Installing the replacement logo would likely invalidate the seal, and hence the mod isn’t really worthwhile.

Once installed, the iPhone’s logo backlight will change in brightness as the screen does; turning the screen’s backlight right down will turn the LED off, while keeping your brightness high will make the logo more noticeable as well. It also means you can notice when notifications come in when your phone is face-down, as the logo will light up when a notification arrives!

It’s definitely a cool effect, and bravo to Banjer for documenting the process so thoroughly!
