One of the most groundbreaking smartphones in recent times, the Galaxy Fold was initially greeted with great fanfare upon its initial tease and later reveal. However being put on hold for three months after widespread review unit failures and a hefty price-tag too boot, derailed the Fold’s momentum, or at least that’s what we thought!
How has the Galaxy Fold performed for Mobile Fun?
It seemed as though this device was destined to be a museum piece, one to be looked back on as a failure in a sales capacity, but a leader in innovation. However here at Mobile Fun we’ve seen a staggering up-take in a device seemingly doomed from the start. What’s even more surprising is that despite the device being supplied with an official case for free, owners in their thousands have visited our websites to browse and purchase accessories for this revolutionary new phone.
Since the Galaxy Fold’s release this device has become Mobile Fun’s 17th most important device. While that may sound low down the list, it actually ranks extremely high for a niche device with an extremely high price-tag, especially when compared against some of the main players from Apple, Samsung, Google and Huawei.

Not just popular within the UK and US markets, the Fold has also seen a surprising up-take in regions such as Australia. Accounting for 2.6% of the entire traffic for our Australian website, this pioneering device has proved extremely popular down-under, likely due to the regions increasing 5G coverage and subsequent need for 5G compatible phones.
How many have Samsung sold?
Mobile Fun’s findings are backed up by the recent announcement from Samsung’s Electronic’s president Young Sohn who revealed that the company had sold over 1 million units of the Galaxy Fold. This represents a staggering number, that even eclipses Samsung’s initial sales forecasts of 500,000 units. This proves a clear demand across multiple continents for a smartphone at the forefront of innovation, despite it’s $2,000 cost to the consumer. With plans to sell more than 6 million units by the end of 2020, it’s clear that Samsung are showing continued faith in their latest creation and that we’ll be seeing more and more early adopters to the folding phone trend as the new year progresses.
What’s next for folding phones?
With the Samsung Galaxy Fold proving concept and growing interest in the nostalgic re-imagining of the Motorola Razr 2019, folding phones are seemingly here to stay. It will be interesting to see if Samsung follow up the success of the Fold by continuing the series and if Apple eventually enter the market with a folding or flexible smartphone, something which looks likely given the fact that Apple have recently gained patent approval for folding technology. With more competition will come more innovation and prices will begin to fall, making this a more viable option for consumers, making it clear that folding phones are here to stay and will be the next big thing in our pockets over the coming decade.
