How to connect iPad (2017) to your TV

The new fifth-generation 2017 iPad has a beautiful display, but sometimes you might prefer watching a video on the biggest screen in your room. This article will show you how to connect your iPad to your TV, monitor or projector using a variety of wired and wireless methods. Let’s get started.

Official Apple Lightning Digital AV Adapter with HDMI1. Use a Lightning to HDMI adapter

By far the simplest option is to use Apple’s Lighting to HDMI adapter, which allows you to connect an HDMI cable between your iPad and your TV. Once connected and set to the right input, your display should show your iPad’s screen, and from there you can queue up whatever Netflix show, Facebook video or YouTube clip that you’d like to watch on the big screen.

2. Stream to an Apple TV

If you have an Apple TV, then this can be another nice and simple option for connecting your 2017 iPad to your TV. Just make sure that your Apple TV is set up on the same wireless network as your iPad, then swipe up from the bottom of your screen and select the AirPlay button. From here, you can choose to mirror your display or send specific content to your Apple TV.

3. Use a Google Chromecast

Google is kind of Apple’s arch-enemy, but that doesn’t mean the two megacorps can’t play nice with other occasionally. The Chromecast is one such cooperative effort, an inexpensive HDMI dongle that plugs into the back of your TV, connects to your wireless network and from there to your phone. Once the Google Home app has been installed and everything set up, simply find the Cast button inside the app of your choice (including BT Sport, Netflix, YouTube and more) to begin streaming to your TV.

4. Use a Lightning to VGA adapter

Older TVs and projectors may not include HDMI ports, so for these you can use a different wired connection: a Lightning to VGA adapter. Simply plug the Lightning connector into your iPad, then connect a VGA cable between the adapter and your display. Remember that VGA doesn’t transfer sound, so you’ll need to use a 3.5mm audio cable between your iPad and your TV or speakers if you want to get more volume than your iPad alone can produce.
