Great device
I wanted a replacement to the 8110 that used for personal use so bear in mind that this doesn't get the use and abuse that my work 8110 gets and liked the idea of a flip phone I bought it from Mobile Fun and received the usual efficient service and delivery First impressions were good and not much has changed with that view in the 5 or 6 months since I've had the handset It s a flip pearl But the flip provides a few interesting enhancements to the 8110 Most noticeable is the media player all of the basic functions for getting music to play are easily accessed Before long you won t even need to take the phone out of your pocket to drive the player Secondly the small outer screen does a good job of being able to get a summary of what s happening music tracks who s calling first couple of lines from the SMS or e mail that just came in None of these will save your life but they will come in handy from time to time I don't use the wifi so can't comment. Battery life is OK.

Blackberry pearl flip issues
Had this phone a few months now. I keep getting an 'application error 200' for no reason and the phone freezes and you dont know it has so you miss calls. Also had battery disconnect itself and only reconnected on removal and refit. BUT I like the phone as it does what I need and the software in general is very good. Shame I cant get rid of the application error and the construction is suspect with the battery contacts loosing connection./

Description

Why Buy?

  • Blackberrys first ever flip phone
  • 3.5 mm stereo headset jack
  • BlackBerry maps
  • Trackball navigation
  • QWERTY Keyboard

BlackBerry's first ever flip phone is here. The BlackBerry 8220 Pearl.

No compromises
With email, phone, Instant Messenger and the Internet, you‘re always connected. An integrated organiser will help you stay on top of your game whilst camera and video recording capabilities mean you can capture and share the moment in just a few clicks. And that's just the beginning.

Rich multimedia
While it is designed to meet the extensive requirements of the business professional during the day, the BlackBerry 8220 Pearl also caters to the business person’s consumer side during evenings and weekends. It features a 2 megapixel camera with video recording capability and built in flash. The enhanced media player can display pictures and slideshows quickly, play movies smoothly in full screen mode, and manage an entire music collection. Audio can be played over the handset’s dual speakers in rich, stereo sound, and when using wired headphones or external speakers, the media player gives the user an equalizer with 11 preset filters - like "Lounge", "Jazz" and "Hip Hop" – that boost or soften audio ranges to create the perfect ambiance.

Powerful WiFi
For even broader high-speed network coverage, the BlackBerry 8220 Pearl supports the 802.11 a/b/g Wi-Fi standards, ideal for use in enterprise or campus wireless LAN deployments, over Wi-Fi hotspots and on wireless home networks.

The build quality is good. With the flip closed there is room on the flip's hinge, which tightens up when opened and provides a very solid feel. The flip's materials are elegant, with a glossy black coating, and the external display turns so "black" when it's off that you don't even realize it's there. It's actually surprising to see it light up to display the time, battery level, connection/signal, and message notification icons and incoming messages. The flip also features the 8220 Pearl's 2 megapixel camera with flash, and the good ole LED notification light mirrors the camera flash's look and is mounted opposite the camera lens, keeping things symmetrical. Also the SureType keyboard is massive, making it very easy to use.

Blackberry 8220 Pearl Screen

Around the perimeter of the phone is the standard, beautifully crafted BlackBerry attire: left side and right side convenience keys, volume up/down controls, a mute button, a 3.5mm headset jack, externally accessible microSD card slot, holes to allow the speaker sound to escape, and like the Pearl, a small anchor for attaching a lanyard. There is one exception though - instead of the usual miniUSB charging/syncing port, the 8220 Pearl features a microUSB port.

What is it? Clamshell BlackBerry email phone
What we think? It's well designed, but it lacks 3G and some may find it chunky
We like Wi-Fi; 3.5mm headphone jack is a bonus
We don’t like Lack of 3G; camera could be better
Accessories microSD memory card, spare battery.
CNET.co.uk judgement

RIM's attempt at cramming the BlackBerry into a clamshell isn't bad. At first we thought we wouldn't like it much, but after using the Flip for some time we realised it's actually very usable and performs well. Our only disappointments are that it doesn't have 3G and the camera isn't great
