Sometimes it’s best to start with the basics. This Kindle leather case, the Leather Flip Case, is simple but effective, protecting your Kindle from damage with high quality, nicely crafted leather. The interior is made of ultra-soft microfibres that are designed to protect the screen and keyboard specifically.

As it’s a flip case, Kindle screen protectors are less vital here than other cases.

4. Lightwedge Verso Artist Series

This Kindle case is part of the growing trend of cases that look like books. While it’s not quite as an original idea as it once was, the Lightwedge Verso Artist Series is definitely one of the best implementations, with the Cities by Sharyn Sowell case being particularly beautiful.

As well as  the outer cover made of vinyl, inside you’ll find a four corner elastic fastening system and an interior pocket for keeping ID, receipts, travel documents and the like.

3. Luminous Case with Light

This Kindle cover includes a clever light attachment; hence its name, the Luminous Case with Light. TheKindle reading light that comes attached is powerful but directed, allowing you to read late at night without straining your eyes or disturbing those sleeping near you. The case, which is available in purple or black, is compact and made of vinyl of good quality.

A simple solution, but a very effective one nonetheless.

2. Otterbox Commuter

The Otterbox Commuter has long been a favourite of mine, and I’m glad to see it’s coming to the Kindle. Although not officially released yet, the Commuter looks set to provide heretofore unparalleled levels of protection to the reading slate, even including a Kindle screen protector as standard.

The Commuter is certainly one of the best Kindle cases around, and looks fantastic too. It was only just beaten to the top spot by our next cover.

1. Speck FitFolio Cover

This custom-fit Speck FitFolio Cover is a lovely looking case, coming in four colours: red, black, purple and (my favourite, and pictured below) peacock. The polycarbonate case is slightly heavier than the other cases, but does provide much more protection against accidental damage. A two way bungee cord will keep the case closed at all times, making it a safe choice.

Overall, it’s a good little package and one of the nicest cases we’ve seen.

The InvisibleSHIELD (hey! no shouting!) is a premium Kindle screen protector. What does premium mean for a screen protector, you ask?

Well, the kit you get in the box is quite extensive; as well as the shield itself you get a special spray adhesive, a smoothing device and a lint-free cloth. This makes it quite easy to apply perfectly, and if you get the positioning a bit wrong you can just take it off, apply more adhesive and have another go.

The M-Edge Executive Jacket is a high-end Kindle jacket that’s perfect for the boardroom. The professional looking leather effect exterior keeps your Kindle safe from scratches or falls, whilst the four point mounting system and soft microseude interior ensure that the Kindle doesn’t move about whilst inside.

It’s a clever system, and doubly so when a fitted M-Edge booklight is attached, offering a seamless option of upgrading your case to work in dim or dark areas.

Sometimes, the simplest things are the best. This Leather Style Book Case is just that: a leather effect Kindle cover, available in quite a few different colours, that keeps your Kindle safe and secure through easy to use elastic ties and quality construction.

For something a little less costly, how about the USB Aroma Fragrance Oil Burner?  Candles for Mother’s Day feels a bit cliché and overdone, but this gives the idea a modern spin – just put in some fragrance oil, plug the lead into the USB port and there’ll soon be relaxing and revitalising fragrances wafting their way through the home, office or car.

I also think this Hi-Rez Digital Photo Frame Key Chain is a nice little trinket, allowing favourite photos and memories to be transported and shared with ease.  It can be filled with holiday snaps, photos of the family or anything else your mum fancies (yes, including pictures of Johnny Depp!)

If your mum’s the tech-savvy tablet type, there are some absolutely gorgeous iPad and iPad 2 covers available on the market – and there’s just no need to stick with a boring old black case when there’s so much variety to be found!

I really like this Tuff Luv Multi-View Case for iPad in Marrakesh Red, which draws the eye immediately with its sumptuously exotic design.  It’s hand-crafted from high-grade textiles and artificial leather, and doubles as an iPad stand for viewing movies or pictures.

Another nice one –  the Jivo Executive Buckle Case for iPad, which also works just as well as an iPad 2 cover.  I’ve always had a thing for satchels, and this one has a nicely rustic feel – as though you’ve just stepped out of Cider with Rosie, albeit with an expensive slab of tech at your side!  It’s hand-crafted from top layer Brazilian buffalo hide and has a neat chunky buckle to keep the tablet tucked away safely.

Looking at the Kindle, the eInk technology is so impressive that it’s sometimes easy to forget that you’re not actually reading from a piece of paper – albeit one that’s shaped like a large, thin calculator.  One of the advantages of the traditional book is that if dropped or bumped it generally won’t suffer much damage other than some minor scuffing or bent pages, but the same can’t be really said for the beautifully-crafted Kindle.

What that means is that, as with every expensive piece of gadgetry, protection is paramount!  Luckily there are lots of Kindle covers on the market to keep your Reader tucked up safe, so wherever you are – whether you’re tucked up too, or out and about in the great wild world – you’ll have peace of mind.

My favourites are the Kindle cases which also feature a built-in light, giving you some illumination when using the Reader in dim light.  Whilst the official Amazon Kindle Lighted Leather Cover will set you back by a hefty chunk of cash, our alternative faux-leather case clocks in at a much more reasonable price.

You won’t lose out on function or protection either: the Kindle case itself is fashioned from durable faux-leather, giving it a stylish and professional appearance.  It’s held shut by a sturdy strap, for extra security, and a soft grey microsuede interior prevents scrapes and scratches.  The specially-designed Kindle light is easily stored when not in use in a light pocket situated behind the Kindle, which is positioned so as not to interfere with the device’s usability.  It features a powerful LED light bulb, so there’s easily enough illumination to see the eReader’s screen without straining your eyes.

The Kandle Clip on Reading Light for Kindle is very different. Instead of being a gooseneck lamp that attaches to your case of clips to your Kindle Case, this Kindle light clips neatly to the top of your eReader and casts a soft, even light over the screen of your Kindle.

When it’s not in use, the lamp folds down into the clip, taking up very little space. It’s battery powered and can be used on any other eReader as well as traditional paper books.

Kindles do suffer the same downsides as paper books though – particularly reading at night or in reduced light. To keep the eye strain down to a minimum, the e-ink displays aren’t backlit, so the only way to read in the dark is by using a Kindle light.

It clips to either your device or case and covers your Kindle with a soft, gentle light that’s perfect for reading. Keeping your Kindle looking it’s best won’t be easy as the combination of white plastic and stainless steel could scratch or mark easily. There are a number of cases available for the Kindle and most styles are on this list. If you just want something simple that will absorb minor knocks and drops and prevent your Kindle from looking grubby a silicone case could be your best option. They are made from a tough silicone gel and are moulded specifically for the Kindle. It still provides access to all of the Kindles buttons and the screen and is a tight, neat fit to your device. They are dust repellent and have a non slip coating that will reduce the chance of it slipping out of your hand.

If you want to protect your Kindle but don’t want the extra bulk of a case then you should take a look at InvisibleSHIELD. They’re more than a screen protector but not really a full case. They’re a tough, thin film that covers all of your Kindle. Installation takes a bit of patience, but the end result is well worth it. It covers almost all of the Kindle and will withstand the toughest of scrapes. The InvisibleSHIELD has a matte finish with a non-slip feel to it. It is great at repelling fingerprints and reducing reflections and as the InvisibleShield doesn’t add any extra bulk to the Kindle you can use in in conjunction with most Kindle Cases.

Tuff-Luv Kindle Book Case

Tuff-Luv make some great, high quality cases for phones, netbooks and eReaders. Their Book Case for the Kindle is no exception. Your Kindle is held in place securely, with all controls accessible. I’m sure most people like to settle down with a book before bed, but reading in the dark is a bit tricky. The Kindle doesn’t have a backlit display, so in order to read in reduced light you’ll need to get yourself a reading light for your Kindle. The XtraFlex2 Reading light has been developed to work with all eReaders including the Kindle. The XtraFlex2 has a flexible, adjustable neck and the lamp has 2 LED bulbs that spread light evenly over the display. You can chose to use just one or both of the LED’s so finding a lighting level to suit won’t be a problem. It runs on batteries so won’t put any extra drain on the Kindle’s battery and can be used with old fashioned paper books too!

The screen on the Kindle is extremely easy to read, but if you scratch it or damage it it could really spoil the enjoyment of reading a book. To prevent anything happening to your screen you’ll need to invest in a Screen Protector. The Tuff-Luv Topcoat is a thin plastic film that’s been precision made to fit the screen of the Kindle. One of the experimental features on the new Kindle is Read To Me – sometimes it’s nice to sit back and relax while someone reads to you, and that’s exactly what this feature does. There are built in speakers, but for better audio clarity you’ll need a set of headphones. Any 3.5mm headphones should work with the Kindle, so we tried the Skullcandy Smokin’ Buds with ours and thought they did a great job. They’re colour matched to the Kindle and extremely comfortable to wear, making them perfect for when you want to just sit back, relax and let your Kindle read to you.

The last of the cases for the Kindle, the Flip Case is similar in many ways to the Tuff-Luv Book case, but instead the cover is hinged at the top rather than the side. As with the Book Case, you slide your Kindle in to it and once it’s in there’s no chance of it falling out. All of the buttons and controls have cut outs and the case doesn’t interfere with their use. There is one feature of this case that makes it different from anything else available – and that’s the built in stand. On the back of the case is a fold away stand that once in place will hold your Kindle upright. The stand is perfect for when you want to read on long plane or train journeys and don’t want the arm ache that you get from holding a book for long periods of time. Just stand it up on the tray on the back of the seat in front of you and your Kindle is perfectly positioned.
