One of the most asked questions on the Mobile Fun Blogs and Forums at the moment is “How do I set up email on my Tocco” and although there are suggestions and a settings spread across the site, I thought I’d bring it all together into one post to make setting up your Hotmail, Gmail or Yahoo email accounts on your Samsung Tocco F480, Samsung Tocco Lite or Samsung Tocco Ultra quick and easy.

Set up email on Samsung Tocco F480, Tocco Lite or Tocco Ultra

Now, before I start I just want to say that these settings should work on all phones, not just the Tocco’s. You may find that they need a little tweaking depending on your network – particularly the SMTP settings. Without getting too technical on you, the SMTP server is similar to your local sorting office, you send your letters there and they then get sorted and sent on to the person you sent the email to. In an attempt to cut down on the amount of spam being sent, some mobile networks restrict the SMTP servers that you can use and in most cases force you to use their own.

So, if you set your phone up using the same SMTP server as your email provider, but find that you get an error message when you try and send a message, go back to the account settings and change the SMTP server to that of your network. Don’t panic if you don’t know what they are – I’ve listed them all for you at the end of this post.

Ok, on to setting the phone up then. All 3 Tocco handsets use the same menu system, so the process for setting them up is exactly the same. Make sure that the time and date on your phone are set correctly and then go to the standby screen on your phone and then select/touch the following:

Messages -> Settings -> Email -> Email Accounts

Depending on your phone and network, you may already find some accounts listed on this screen. If you have got some listed here, you should reset them to avoid any confusion and prevent any errors. To do this:

Highlight the account -> press options -> press ‘Reset’ -> press ‘Reset’ again when asked for confirmation -> Press ‘OK’

Once you’ve done this for each of the account listed, select the top one (Account 1) press ‘Options’ and select ‘Edit’

Now for the fun bit! You need to enter the settings listed below into your phone. I’ve tried to keep the running order the same as is on the phone so it should be easy to follow. Where I’ve put ‘mypassword’ or ‘myemail@’ you should replace this with your password and email address.

Hotmail

Account Name: Hotmail

SMTP Server: smtp.live.com

Same as POP3 & IMAP4: Not Ticked

Username: myname@hotmail.com

Use SMTP Authentication: Ticked

Same as POP3 & IMAP4: Ticked

Gmail
There are 2 possible set up’s for Gmail, POP3 and IMAP. POP3 email is stored on the email server and is then downloaded to your phone or PC at set intervals. IMAP email is stored on the server permanently, and when you access email through your phone or PC, you’re actually looking at your emails on the server. It’s personal preference as to which is better, but if you’re accessing your email on more than one device I’d opt for IMAP. This way you’ll be able to see all of your emails no matter where you log on. Which ever option you go for you need to remember to activate POP and IMAP email in the settings panel of your Gmail account.

All being well, you should now be able to send and receive your emails. To test it, go into your Email Inbox, press ‘Options’ and ‘Download’. It might take a few minutes to connect for the first time, and you may well be presented with a security alert that says ‘Certificate Validation Failed’. This is perfectly normal, so press accept and your phone will continue to check for new messages. To check that you can send emails, send yourself a quick email. If it fails or you get a “no response” message, you’ve either got some of the settings wrong, or you need to change the SMTP settings to those of your network.

Network SMTP Settings:
Before you try changing the SMTP server, double check the settings you have entered match the settings listed above. If they all match and you still can’t send, you’ll need to change the SMTP server to your networks’ server.

Vodafone

SMTP Server: send.vodafone.net

SMTP Port: 25

Secure Connection: Off

Use SMTP Authentication: Not Ticked

Orange

SMTP Server: smtp.orange.co.uk

SMTP Port: 25

Secure Connection: Off

Use SMTP Authentication: Not Ticked

O2
To send email on the O2 network, you will need to have an O2 Webmail username and password. You will need these details to be able to use the O2 SMTP server.

SMTP Server: smtp.o2.co.uk

SMTP Port: 25

Secure Connection: SSL

Same as POP3 & IMAP4: Not Ticked

Username: myo2username@o2.co.uk

Password: myo2password

T-Mobile

SMTP Server: smtp.t-email.co.uk

SMTP Port: 25

Secure Connection: Off

Use SMTP Authentication: Not Ticked

3
I’ve heard of some people having problems accessing Hotmail on 3 so these may not work and you may need to subscribe to ‘Email on 3′

SMTP Server: smtp.three.co.uk

SMTP Port: 25

Secure Connection: Off

Use SMTP Authentication: Not Ticked

I’ve closed this post to any comments due as it’s quite a technical post, but if you have any problems using these settings or something isn’t working, please let me know using the Mobile Fun Forums and I’ll see what I can do to get your emails working.

The settings that you need to enter are the same for all phones, regardless of make, but where you have to enter them does vary from handset to handset. If you’re unsure, consult your user guide as this will explain where to enter them. If you’ve not done so already, it might be worth checking to see if you can get the settings sent to you automatically before you start. Our post on WAP and MMS settings should help you with getting them sent through to you.

In order to access internet, email or picture messaging on your phone you’ll need to make sure your phone is set up correctly. These settings are often referred to as WAP settings, and are also needed for downloading content to your phone, such as pictures, ringtones and wallpapers.

If your handset was purchased from one of the networks, then it should already be configured ready to use, but if you bought it from a high street chain or using a handset that you’ve been given, you’ll need to get the settings for your phone.

Fortunately, this is now a really simple thing to do! All you need to do is visit your networks help and support site, complete a short form and the settings will be sent through to your handset for you.

Orange WAP Settings

O2 WAP Settings

Vodafone WAP Settings

Virgin WAP Settings

T-Mobile WAP Settings

If you’re on the 3 network, then unfortunately you’ll need to contact their customer service team, as its not possible for the settings to be sent through automatically for handsets on the 3 network.

Things to look out for:
Before the settings are sent, you will need to tell the website the make and model of your phone, and whether your phone is on contract or pay as you go. It’s important to select the right one, as contract settings won’t work on pay as you go phones. You will then be asked to choose the settings that you want sending through to your phone. There are normally 3 to choose from: Email, Internet/WAP and MMS. If you want to be able to download ringtones and send picture messages, then you only need the Internet/WAP and MMS settings.

Its important that you get both, even if you only want to send picture messages.

If you want to configure your phone for email, you will need to have your email account information to hand. This will normally include your email address, account username and password, and in some cases you will also need the POP3 or IMAP settings for your email provider. If you’re not sure what these are then a quick search online will normally find them. If you can’t find them, post your email provider (the part after the @ symbol) below and I’ll do my best to find it for you.

Handset not listed?
In some cases, you may find that your handset isn’t listed on the networks website. if it isn’t, it just means that the handset you’ve got isn’t officially supported, but don’t worry – if your handset is made by one of the companies listed below you can get the settings sent through from their website.

Sony Ericsson – Internet/WAP, MMS, Email

Samsung – Internet/WAP, MMS

Motorola

Manual Settings:
If your handset is not listed on your network’s website and you can’t get them from one of the sites listed above, then you will need to set up your phone manually. This can be a little confusing, and because each phone is different, you’ll need to dig out your user guide to find out where you need to enter the settings.
