5. Apple Leather Smart Cover

Smart Covers were like gold dust when the iPad 2 was released and it’s easy to see why.  Not only do they protect the screen of your iPad 2, but they also fold back into a handy little stand when you’re using your iPad.  The Smart Cover is the perfect fit on your iPad 2 and activates the sleep mode of your iPad when the cover is closed; so they save power look good and are multifunctional – what more could you want?

The injunction, which was a preliminary measure before the full hearing of the case, has since been challenged by Samsung, who managed to convince the court that preventing the slate from being sold all over Europe due to the actions of a local court was too much. The injunction has therefore been lifted, and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 has returned to sale across the EU.

The actual evidence presented by Apple is quite interesting; essentially the crux of their legal argument was that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 was an exact facsimile of the iPad 2, even down to the packaging. (This is certainly a feature of the Samsung Galaxy line; the Samsung Galaxy S2 cases are precisely the same as iPhone 4 packaging, even down to the layout of individual items in the box.)

In one document submitted to the court, they specifically showed how closely the size and proportions of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 case matched that of the iPad 2, claiming that they had the same aspect ratio.

Unfortuantely, the measurements presented appear to be falsified, as you can see in the image to the right. The Samsung Galaxy Tab is presented as having a total aspect ratio of 1.36, although in reality it is much thinner, with an aspect ratio of 1.46. (Aspect ratio in this case refers to the size of the entire chassis, not just the screen).

Once this case kicks off properly, it will be interesting to see how this mistake by Apple is perceived by the court; with luck it won’t stop the deployment of one of the best competitor’s to the iPad 2.

Presumably it’ll be a slam dunk for Samsung; they’ll bring in a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 car holder or Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 cover or something and put in the iPad 2, and stare pointedly as it falls out due to rather obviously being a different shape.

We’ll continue to follow this story as it develops; in the mean time, you’d be wise to pick up a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 just in case Apple do manage to block the Tab from sale in the actual court proceedings from August 25th. The new smartphone will look very similar to the iPhone 4, according to one of the sources, who declined to be identified.  But will this be an all-new iPhone 5 or more of an iPhone 4GS kind of deal?  We’d guess the latter, as a complete overhaul of the iPhone so soon after the iPhone 4 release seems a little unlikely – though with nothing concrete confirmed as of yet, the rumour mill’s going to be working overtime as Apple fans gear up for another potentially huge announcement.

Last night Steve Jobs took to the stage in San Francisco, despite his ailing health, to show off Apple’s latest technological triumph.  Simultaneous events the US and UK saw Apple-fans gathering to take their first look at the brand-spanking new iPad 2, the second generation tablet which the company thinks will be even bigger than the first.

So were our predictions right? Here’s a summary of the main new features:

33% lighter and 15% thinner
The most immediately obvious difference is that Apple have shaved some of the unnecessary bulk off the device.  This was a bit of a no-brainer; most second generation devices from them are smaller and lighter.  Great news nonetheless, as the iPad was prone to cause arm ache after prolonged use, which meant that for things like reading e-books the Kindle had a clear edge.

The front-facing camera was practically a given, to promote wider use of FaceTime, which hasn’t quite taken off properly yet. The one at the rear was slightly less certain, but there it is – and it can record in 720p video to boot.

Dual Core A-5 Chip
Power-hungry techies and gamers will be glad to see this included, giving the new iPad a huge increase in processing power.  Apple claim that the device should now be 9x faster for games, so hopefully some interesting stuff should tart turning up on the App Store before too long!  Despite the increase in processing power, Apple say that the iPad 2 battery should still last for 10 hours.  We’re impressed.

Something we’ll definitely be stocking up on here when gathering iPad 2 accessories are the new upcoming range of Smart Covers, which will breathe new life into the old design and give the second gen a clear aesthetic edge.

iPad 2 Smart Covers attach using a magnetic hinge, providing ultra-slim protection in a range of colours.  Not only that, but they also fold up neatly to become a stand, allowing more flexibility of viewing.  This avoids the need to buy a bulky iPad 2 cover, although the security-savvy will probably want to grab an iPad 2 sleeve or iPad 2 case just to provide that extra bit of cushioning from knocks and bumps.  You can never be too careful, especially when it comes to a bit of kit like this!

So what didn’t we see?
The much hoped for USB drive failed to materialise, and (no surprises here) the iPad 2 is still not Flash-compatible.  Anyone who was hoping against hope for a retina display will also be disappointed; it seems that the technology just isn’t there yet.
