Mobile Fun’s Top 20 Handsets

Monday, November 28th, 2011

Here at Mobile Fun, we measure each handsets performance against its peers, looking at its page views, sales and more. This gives us a unique viewpoint as to the most actively used handsets for a given period, which reveals more than just handset sales in isolation. We’re also handset agnostic; we’re as happy to support Android handsets as iPhones, or Windows Phones as BlackBerries.

We thought we’d release this top 20 list to our readers, to give them a better idea of what headsets are trending. As well as the big names you’d expect, there are quite a few surprises as well. Let’s get right into it!

1. Samsung Galaxy S2

Samsung-GALAXY-S2-back

The Samsung Galaxy S2 still rules the roost, seven months after it was first launched in the EU. The phone’s combination of incredibly high-powered internals, a slim figure and gorgeous 4.3” screen have continued to prove popular. Samsung have announced the phone will be upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich early next year, ensuring it’ll continue to be relevant even as phones with bigger displays and quad-core processors launch. The Samsung Galaxy S2 won’t back down without a fight.

2. Apple iPhone 4

white-iphone-4

The iPhone 4 pips its younger brother, the 4S, to the second place spot. The older phone provides arguably better value than the iPhone 4S, as it comes with most of the the same hardware and software. That’s not bad for a phone that was released in June last year. As the iPhone 4S comes down in price though, expect the iPhone 4 to fall a few places.

3. Apple iPhone 4S

siri-iphone-4s

The iPhone 4S comes with a few added features compared to the iPhone 4, including a faster dual-core processor, a powerful f/2.4 camera and Siri, the voice-controlled AI assistant. While it comes at a premium price, the iPhone 4S has seen massive sales from the Apple faithful. It’ll surely beat its older brother some day, but for now it remains in third place.

4. Samsung Galaxy Note

The mammoth Samsung Galaxy Note is an amazing half-way house between a tablet and a smartphone, with a gorgeous HD 5.3” screen and a powerful set of internals, similar to the popular Galaxy S2. The Note comes with its own custom stylus and associated software, making it a great phone to take notes on. The unusual handset seems to be love it or hate it, but for many it’s impossible to ignore such a bright and beautiful screen. It’ll be interesting to see if the Note remains a mainstay of this list, or whether it’ll drop in the face of other HD phones like the Galaxy Nexus.

5. BlackBerry 8520 Curve

BLACKBERRY-CURVE-8520

The BlackBerry 8520 Curve is the oldest handset on the list, still jumping into the #5 spot from #6 last time. The phone was released in August 2009, so it’s done well to stand the test of time. While it doesn’t support 3G, it provides that winning combination of a solid QWERTY keyboard and the intensely popular BBM app at a very low price. This has made it one of the most desirable BlackBerry phones for the past three years, both for economical business people and cash-strapped teenagers. Will it ever be stopped? It’s hard to tell.

6. HTC Sensation

sensation

The HTC Sensation is HTC’s answer to the Samsung Galaxy S2, and is the top ranking HTC handset on this list (but not the only one). It sports a solid qHD screen, a quick dual core processor and its popular HTC Sense UI. The Sensation has been upgraded with a number of variants recently, including the super-sized Sensation XL and the faster, Beats-Audio-enabled Sensation XE. The original still beats both variants though, holding a #6 rank.

7. Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830

SKT-Galaxy-Ace

The Samsung Galaxy Ace (the Korean variant of which is pictured above) is the third-oldest Android phone in the top 10, being released in November last year. The Galaxy Ace is the more affordable middle child of the original Galaxy S family, and comes with a 3.5” screen and slower processor than its sibling. The Galaxy Ace still looks the part though, with a nice if a bit plasticky aesthetic.

8. Apple iPhone 3GS

iphone3gs_4up

Yep, you guessed it – the third oldest iPhone still commands a top 10 position on our list. With the same 1 GHz processor than its successor, the iPhone still provides an excellent Apple experience, at a fraction of the price of the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. The iPhone 3GS lacks that beautiful Retina display of the newer models, but will likely stick around for some time to come.

Other essential iPhone 3GS accessories: DriveTime Car Pack & Martin Fields Screen Protector

9. Samsung Galaxy S

Samsung-GalaxyS

Coming in at Number 9 is another Samsung Android handset of yesteryear, the affordable Samsung Galaxy S. The predecessor to the Galaxy S2 continues to be popular due to its low price point and good features, which portended the success of its later model. The Galaxy S was released in June of 2010, but still compares favourably to other Android handsets with a premium design and strong 1 GHz processor.

10. HTC Desire

HTC-Desire-2304

The HTC Desire continues to be a desirable (haha) phone, with good performance coupled with HTC’s legendary build quality and Sense UI software. The phone was released back in February last year, making it the oldest Android phone on the list, but it’s held up well over time. The phone’s easy to root too, which overcomes its biggest drawback, its limited internal storage capacity.

11. Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc

The first Sony Ericsson handset on the list, the Xperia Arc combines good power and the Sony Bravia engine in a small shell. Here are our Xperia Arc accessories.

12. HTC Desire HD

The Desire’s bigger cousin is the 12th phone on the list, and the third HTC phone. Here’s our selection of HTC Desire HD accessories.

13. HTC Wildfire S

It’s another HTC handset! The Wildfire S is well respected for its moderate price and excellent feature set. If you’re looking for HTC Wildfire S accessories, hit the link.

14. BlackBerry Bold 9900

The BlackBerry Bold 9900 is the top of the line BlackBerry phone, with the latest OS, a touch screen and a dual core processor. We’ve got all the BlackBerry Bold 9900 accessories you need, too.

15. BlackBerry Curve 3G 9300

Another BlackBerry in the top 20, the Curve 3G 9300 is the 3G variant of the popular 8520. Looking for BlackBerry Curve 3G 9300 accessories? We’ve got you covered.

16. BlackBerry Torch 9800

Our final BlackBerry in the top 20, the Torch 9800 is another mid to high range BlackBerry with some good features and a powerful single core processor. BlackBerry Torch 9800 accessories go here.

17. Samsung Galaxy Nexus

The first Ice Cream Sandwich phone makes its debut appearance at #17. We’ve already got a wide range of Samsung Galaxy Nexus accessories, so if you’re an early adopter get in here!

18. HTC Desire S

The HTC Desire S is another popular Desire variant that offers the same hardware in a smaller package. The HTC Desire S accessories are correspondingly smaller, as you’d expect.

19. Nokia N8

The last great Symbian phone from Nokia, the N8, still barely edges out its new-school Lumia rival. These Nokia N8 accessories are in stock.

20. Nokia Lumia 800

The first Windows Phone on the list and also the newest, the Nokia Lumia 800 shot up the most this month. We’ll look for better results next time! In the mean time, here are the Nokia Lumia 800 accessories.

Top 10 Stats

  • Of the handsets featured, 6 run Android, 3 run iOS and 1 runs BlackBerry OS.
  • Samsung is the top Android manufacturer, with four handsets in the top 10; HTC is the other with two.
  • The BlackBerry Curve 8520 was the only phone to gain a position on last month’s numbers, rising to #5 from #6.

Top 20 Stats

  • Apple’s got only three handsets in the top 20, which paints a more realistic picture of the numerous Android phones it competes with.
  • BlackBerry has a stronger performance here, with four handsets in the top 20.
  • Android still rules the roost, with 12 of 20 handsets running Android, most with Android 2.2 or Android 2.3.
  • The most improved handset was the Nokia Lumia 800, which shot up to 20th place to become the highest ranking Windows phone, and the only Windows Phone in the top 20.
  • The Desire was the phone with the most variants in the top 20, with the original, Desire HD and Desire S all making it in.

Interesting stuff – I wonder how far the Lumia 800 will climb! The Galaxy Nexus should feature heavily in next month’s chart too – but will it be able to dethrone the dominant S2?

We’ll be looking to make this a monthly feature, so if you’re a fan let us know! You can reach us via the comments section of the blog (below), Twitter, Facebook or even our new Mobile Fun page Google Plus.

Thanks for reading, and farewell.

Xperia Active Ships Tomorrow!

Monday, November 28th, 2011

The Xperia family keeps growing — its newest member is the unlocked Xperia Active, an up-armoured variant of the Xperia line that features powerful internals inside a most-everything-resistant shell, similar to Motorola’s Defy+. The phone’s screen even works with wet fingers — a unique feature that could make this the best phone for anyone that works in wet conditions.

This sim-free Sony Xperia Active handset is definitely the one to choose if you’re an active person — hence the name. The phone is resistant to both water and dust, making it a good choice for outdoor work, where you won’t need a bulky and expensive case to adequately protect your phone. The Active also comes with a good variety of sports apps, so you can keep track of your active endeavours.

Internally, the sim-free Sony Ericsson Xperia Active is as strong as the rest of its Xperia bretheren. There’s a 1 GHz processor, half a gigabyte of RAM, and a gigabyte of internal storage (that’s upgradeable to 32 GB with a micro-SD card).  The camera’s also strong, a 5 megapixels, and it’s also capable of recording 72op video. The 3″ screen is an impressive 480 x 320 pixels, which is quite good for its size at 192 pixels per inch.

The Xperia Active unlocked comes with the latest version of Android Gingerbread. As with the rest of the 2011 Xperia line from Sony Ericsson, the Xperia Active will be upgradeable to Ice Cream Sandwich, probably early next year, so you’ll have the latest version of Android ready to roll pretty soon.

If you’re looking for a phone as tough as you are, then the Xperia Active is a great choice (and don’t just take our word for it, check out TechRadar’s 4 star review). For more information, check out the Sony Ericsson Xperia Active sim-free product page. We’ve also got a range of Xperia Active accessories ready to go, including Xperia Active cases and Xperia Active car holders.

Sim-Free Nokia C2-00 Dual Sim Phone Available Now!

Friday, November 25th, 2011

Changing SIM cards when you’re travelling internationally or getting home from the office can be a pain. You might think about carrying around two phones instead, but then there’s the hassle of making sure everything – calls, messages, media – gets synced up between the two handsets.

A simpler option is to pick up a phone with two SIM slots, like the sim-free Nokia C2-00. You can switch between the two installed SIM cards easily, using the phone’s built in SIM-swap setting. The second SIM slot is hot-swappable too, meaning if you ever need a third or fourth SIM for special occasions, you can use it immediately without having to restart your phone.

The Nokia C2-00 unlocked  is also just a great, simple phone all around. The Nokia C2-00 hearkens back to a time when phones were used for calling people, and occasionally texting them, and it excels at these tasks.

Although it comes with 64 MB of internal storage, you can expand that massively with the micro-SD card slot, allowing up to 32 GB of media storage for photos or music. The music player is top notch, and works over the 3.5mm stereo jack or Bluetooth. It’s even got an FM radio.

Overall, the Nokia C2-00 sim-free is a cool and inexpensive dual SIM phone that’ll definitely be worth its weight if you’re an international traveller or busy businessman.

For more information, see the unlocked Nokia C2-00 product page.

Nokia Lumia 800 Sim Free In Stock Now!

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011

The first real Windows Phone, the Nokia Lumia 800, is now available sim-free from Mobile Fun. The phone uses the clever, critically-acclaimed design of the Nokia N9 and fuses it with the future-facing Windows Phone OS.

The edge-to-edge glass design of the sim-free Nokia Lumia 800 includes a 3.7″ AMOLED screen at 480 x 800, a speedy 1.4 GHz processor and 16 GB of internal storage. There’s even a dedicated camera button, a new addition from the N9, which meshes well with the high quality Carl Zeiss camera. The chassis of the handset is a joy to hold, and is a fitting evolution of the N9 line.

The Lumia 800 comes with the latest version of Windows Phone 7.5, Mango, and will be soon upgraded to 7.6, Tango. It’s been a good first year for Microsoft’s mobile operating system, with the 40,000 app milestone being reached recently. That’s still a fraction of the size of the Android and Apple app marketplaces, but Windows Phone is growing at a much faster rate, achieving a higher number of apps in its first year than both of its competitors. With Microsoft’s financial staying power, expect that trend to continue.

As well as stocking the Nokia Lumia 800 sim-free, we’ve also got a wide range of Nokia Lumia 800 accessories, including Nokia Lumia 800 cases and Nokia Lumia 800 covers. If you’re looking to pick up this awesome Windows Phone, you’ll be well covered.

For more information, check out the official unlocked Nokia Lumia 800 product page.

What do you think of the handset? Why not let us know on Twitter, Facebook or even Google Plus?

Until next time, this is Will signing off.
