We’re happy to confirm that we’ll be carrying the new Sony Xperia E4 that we first announced earlier this week. The new budget phone from Sony looks like a strong competitor to popular budget options like the Moto E and Lumia 535. It’ll retail for £100, and will be available sim-free and unlocked at Mobile Fun.
The E4 comes with a nice and big five inch screen, running at qHD resolution (960 x 540). That’s suitable for watching YouTube and taking photos with a sizeable viewfinder, and definitely falls in line for the current trend for larger phone screens. Despite having a much bigger screen than the E3 that came before it, the phone’s minimal bezels make it only slightly larger.
The phone signifies a change in styles for Sony with a new, rounder design that should be more comfortable to hold. The phone still is recognisably Sony though, with the circular metal lock button, circular camera cutout and of course the Sony logo on the back.
The Xperia E4 is surprisingly strong when it comes to hardware, with a quad-core MediaTek processor running at 1.3GHz. This is backed with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage – which can be extended using micro SD cards. The 2300mAh battery seems large for a phone of this size, so battery life should be respectable too. When it comes to cameras, it’s also quite reasonable: five megapixels on the back and 2 megapixels up front for selfies. The only big downside to this phone is the lack of LTE support, but if you’re looking for a budget phone then it’s best not to pay extra for LTE anyway.
The phone comes with Android 4.4, with a light Sony theme on top. Sony tend to make minimal changes to the OS, and with the strength of Android KitKat that seems like a good choice. One nice addition is a battery saving mode, which will allow you to get the most out of that 2300mAh battery.
