The venerable PlayStation 3 controller – the DualShock 3 – remains one of the best ways to play console-style games and emulators on Android. This week, we’re adding a new accessory that makes the DualShock 3 much easier to use with a wide range of smartphones: the Gamehook adapter.
This new accessory clips onto your controller and your phone, securely bringing the two together in a configuration that mimics proper handheld consoles like the PlayStation Vita or 3DS. You’ve got your full console controller on the bottom, with your phone sitting just on top. It’s brilliant for gaming on Android, and offers a much more tactile and controllable experience than tapping on glass. A surprising number of games support controllers, and you can find good lists online.
How does the Gamehook compare to dedicated controllers like the Samsung Gamepad (above)? Well, first of all you’re getting a much better controller – the DualShock 3 is a full-size controller with proper dual sticks, analogue triggers and all of the buttons you’d ever need. Secondly, it’s a more affordable option. You’re also potentially saving a lot of money if you already have a DualShock 3. Even if you have to buy one afresh, you’re still looking at a small savings compared to the GamePad.
Of course, there are some downsides as well – the DualShock 3 doesn’t fold up neatly like the GamePad, so you’ll need a bit more space in your bag. You’ll also need to keep a cable attached to the controller, unless you’ve rooted your phone and have set up a Bluetooth connection. It’s not hard to do, but it’s still something to think about.
Regardless, both options are great choices for gaming on Android. For more information on both the Gamehook and the GamePad, visit the relevant product page below:
