Here at Mobile Fun, we measure each handsets performance against its peers, looking at its page views, sales and more. This gives us a unique viewpoint as to the most actively used handsets for a given period, which reveals more than just handset sales in isolation. We’re also handset agnostic; we’re as happy to support Android handsets as iPhones, or Windows Phones as BlackBerries.
We thought we’d release this top 20 list to our readers, to give them a better idea of what headsets are trending. As well as the big names you’d expect, there are quite a few surprises as well. Let’s get right into it!
1. Samsung Galaxy S2
The Samsung Galaxy S2 still rules the roost, seven months after it was first launched in the EU. The phone’s combination of incredibly high-powered internals, a slim figure and gorgeous 4.3” screen have continued to prove popular. Samsung have announced the phone will be upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich early next year, ensuring it’ll continue to be relevant even as phones with bigger displays and quad-core processors launch. The Samsung Galaxy S2 won’t back down without a fight.

2. Apple iPhone 4
The iPhone 4 pips its younger brother, the 4S, to the second place spot. The older phone provides arguably better value than the iPhone 4S, as it comes with most of the the same hardware and software. That’s not bad for a phone that was released in June last year. As the iPhone 4S comes down in price though, expect the iPhone 4 to fall a few places.

3. Apple iPhone 4S
The iPhone 4S comes with a few added features compared to the iPhone 4, including a faster dual-core processor, a powerful f/2.4 camera and Siri, the voice-controlled AI assistant. While it comes at a premium price, the iPhone 4S has seen massive sales from the Apple faithful. It’ll surely beat its older brother some day, but for now it remains in third place.

4. Samsung Galaxy Note
The mammoth Samsung Galaxy Note is an amazing half-way house between a tablet and a smartphone, with a gorgeous HD 5.3” screen and a powerful set of internals, similar to the popular Galaxy S2. The Note comes with its own custom stylus and associated software, making it a great phone to take notes on. The unusual handset seems to be love it or hate it, but for many it’s impossible to ignore such a bright and beautiful screen. It’ll be interesting to see if the Note remains a mainstay of this list, or whether it’ll drop in the face of other HD phones like the Galaxy Nexus.

5. BlackBerry 8520 Curve
The BlackBerry 8520 Curve is the oldest handset on the list, still jumping into the #5 spot from #6 last time. The phone was released in August 2009, so it’s done well to stand the test of time. While it doesn’t support 3G, it provides that winning combination of a solid QWERTY keyboard and the intensely popular BBM app at a very low price. This has made it one of the most desirable BlackBerry phones for the past three years, both for economical business people and cash-strapped teenagers. Will it ever be stopped? It’s hard to tell.

6. HTC Sensation
The HTC Sensation is HTC’s answer to the Samsung Galaxy S2, and is the top ranking HTC handset on this list (but not the only one). It sports a solid qHD screen, a quick dual core processor and its popular HTC Sense UI. The Sensation has been upgraded with a number of variants recently, including the super-sized Sensation XL and the faster, Beats-Audio-enabled Sensation XE. The original still beats both variants though, holding a #6 rank.

7. Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830
The Samsung Galaxy Ace (the Korean variant of which is pictured above) is the third-oldest Android phone in the top 10, being released in November last year. The Galaxy Ace is the more affordable middle child of the original Galaxy S family, and comes with a 3.5” screen and slower processor than its sibling. The Galaxy Ace still looks the part though, with a nice if a bit plasticky aesthetic.

8. Apple iPhone 3GS
Yep, you guessed it – the third oldest iPhone still commands a top 10 position on our list. With the same 1 GHz processor than its successor, the iPhone still provides an excellent Apple experience, at a fraction of the price of the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. The iPhone 3GS lacks that beautiful Retina display of the newer models, but will likely stick around for some time to come.

9. Samsung Galaxy S
Coming in at Number 9 is another Samsung Android handset of yesteryear, the affordable Samsung Galaxy S. The predecessor to the Galaxy S2 continues to be popular due to its low price point and good features, which portended the success of its later model. The Galaxy S was released in June of 2010, but still compares favourably to other Android handsets with a premium design and strong 1 GHz processor.

10. HTC Desire
The HTC Desire continues to be a desirable (haha) phone, with good performance coupled with HTC’s legendary build quality and Sense UI software. The phone was released back in February last year, making it the oldest Android phone on the list, but it’s held up well over time. The phone’s easy to root too, which overcomes its biggest drawback, its limited internal storage capacity.

11. Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc

12. HTC Desire HD

13. HTC Wildfire S

14. BlackBerry Bold 9900

17. Samsung Galaxy Nexus

18. HTC Desire S

19. Nokia N8
The last great Symbian phone from Nokia, the N8, still barely edges out its new-school Lumia rival. These Nokia N8 accessories are in stock.
20. Nokia Lumia 800

Top 10 Stats
- Of the handsets featured, 6 run Android, 3 run iOS and 1 runs BlackBerry OS.
- Samsung is the top Android manufacturer, with four handsets in the top 10; HTC is the other with two.
- The BlackBerry Curve 8520 was the only phone to gain a position on last month’s numbers, rising to #5 from #6.
Top 20 Stats
- Apple’s got only three handsets in the top 20, which paints a more realistic picture of the numerous Android phones it competes with.
- BlackBerry has a stronger performance here, with four handsets in the top 20.
- Android still rules the roost, with 12 of 20 handsets running Android, most with Android 2.2 or Android 2.3.
- The most improved handset was the Nokia Lumia 800, which shot up to 20th place to become the highest ranking Windows phone, and the only Windows Phone in the top 20.
- The Desire was the phone with the most variants in the top 20, with the original, Desire HD and Desire S all making it in.
Interesting stuff – I wonder how far the Lumia 800 will climb! The Galaxy Nexus should feature heavily in next month’s chart too – but will it be able to dethrone the dominant S2?
