If you’re one of the lucky ones who managed to get their hands on the iPad 2 last week, or you’re planning to do so soon, then the chances are that you’re pretty tech-savvy. Tech-savvy enough to realise that the so-called “iPad 2 Smart Cover” may, indeed, be very very smart (You can hang it on a fridge! It has cool magnets inside! It does an amazing foldy-uppy thing like an origami bird!) but it doesn’t exactly offer 100% protection.
iPad 2 Smart Covers
In fact it only really offers 50% protection, and the minute you shove that gorgeously slim slice of tech into your bag, you’re risking attacks from all of your other horrible spiky belongings. Frankly, they’re probably pretty jealous of the amount of affection you’ve been bestowing on your latest toy, so they’re not going to go easy on it! Especially not that lethal set of keys, or that bottle-opener you shoved in there the other week, or anything else a bit sharp you’ve been carrying around.
There’s been chatter across the tech sphere about how best to avoid The Dreaded Scratch, and several manufacturers have been coming up with cases for the back which are compatible with the iPad 2 Smart Covers.
One popular method is to go for an iPad 2 screen protector, such as the Zagg InvisibleShield for iPad 2. The InvisibleShield has been a firm favourite for smartphones for ages, because it’s the toughest, most durable scratch-protection film available in the world – it was originally designed by the military for use on the edges of helicopter blades. Another benefit is that it won’t add any extra bulk to your iPad 2, and (huzzah!) we’ve got some in stock.

We’re also looking at a number of other Smart Cover-compatible iPad 2 covers that are available.
The first coming into stock here at Mobile Fun is the XGear Smart Cover Enhancer, which we particularly liked the look of and seems to have been attracting a lot of attention across the interwebs. It works in tandem with the Smart Cover to protect your iPad 2 fully, whilst retaining all of the functionality of the Smart Cover itself – you can still use it as an iPad 2 stand, and it won’t affect the magnetic sleep-sensors. It’s on its way in both black and clear varieties.

We’re also working on sourcing a range of alternatives, so if there’s anything you’ve seen around that you think we should be stocking, let us know!
There’s a similar sort of thing from QCC (Quality Camcarrier Corp), the Smart Back Cover for iPad 2, which offers complete security and a back cover to match the original style of the Smart Cover, in a range of quirky-looking colours.

The DODOCase BookBack for iPad 2 is quite interesting – same style, but with a gorgeous minimalist design and crafted with care in San Francisco from Moroccan fabric. I’m not sure how much shock-protection you’d get from this one, as its a peel-and-stick fabric iPad 2 skin, but it certainly looks great and should protect against scratches at the very least.
The iPad 2 Smart Cover hit the shelves here at Mobile Fun yesterday – but what some people might not realise is that they aren’t the only iPad 2 covers available which boast that already-famous magnetic technology.
The real innovation of the Smart Cover is that the iPad 2 can detect whenever it’s been opened or closed and switch itself in and out of sleep mode accordingly. That saves time (admittedly only the swipe of a finger, but time is everything these days!) but also has the benefit of ensuring that the iPad uses energy as efficiently as possible.
However, other manufacturers are very sensibly getting in on the act and this magnetic tech is no longer unique to the Smart Cover – which is great news for people that want more choice in how their iPad 2 cover looks and what functions it fulfils!
SD have brought out three rather gorgeous specimens which use exactly the same magnetic sleep sensor technology as the Smart Cover, as well as being available in a range of styles and colours, so of course we’ve snapped them up. Each of them also incorporates a multi-angle iPad 2 stand so that the tablet can be positioned for whatever you’re doing.

Apple’s official iPad 2 smart covers have finally arrived in stock today, and very lovely they all look too!
Like most Apple products, the iPad 2 Smart Cover is both a technological marvel and brilliant in its simplicity. The Smart Cover boasts two main innovations: its integrated magnet technology, which lets the iPad detect when the cover has been closed and switch itself automatically into Sleep Mode; and its flexible but sturdy folds, which let you fold the case itself up so that it transforms into a handy stand. That means you don’t have to buy a separate iPad 2 stand if you don’t want to; you can simply prop it up using the Smart Cover and comfortably watch videos, play games and surf the internet.
The Smart Cover comes in a range of colours (blue, red, grey, black, white, navy, pink, orange, tan, green) and is available in either smooth polyurethane or as a stylish leather iPad 2 case.
One potential down-side to the Smart Cover (gorgeous though it is) is that it can only protect one side of the iPad at once. If you’re worried about that and want to grab some extra protection for whilst you’re out and about, an iPad 2 screen protector can be used to keep the display itself clear and unscratched, or alternatively there are some types of iPad 2 cover which have a Smart Cover compatible back – meaning you can use the covers in conjunction with each other.
I’m fed up with my iPad 2 cover. Not because it’s old or shabby, in fact far from it as it’s the near indestructible ZeroShock 3 Netbook Case. What I’m after is a retro looking case with a good old fashioned look and feel to it. I don’t want zips, clips or magnets, I want a good old fashioned fastener and the feel of an old school bag.
The Jivo Executive Buckle Case for Apple iPad 2 / iPad is just the ticket. This Executive Buckle case has been hand made from the best quality Brazilian Buffalo Hide. The case has a lovely smooth finish to it which feels great when you hold it, and the non-abrasive interior makes sure your iPad is not scratched whilst you place it in or out of the case.

The size of this iPad 2 cover is slightly larger than the iPad to accommodate the device inside it. If you want further protection for your iPad then this case has been designed to also fit inside your briefcase or bag. But then that would hide it’s featured brass buckle on the front. This has been used as opposed to a zip or magnetic closure to ensure nothing harms your iPad’s multi-touch screen.

Now I’ve just got to try and find the shoes to match.
Looking at the Kindle, the eInk technology is so impressive that it’s sometimes easy to forget that you’re not actually reading from a piece of paper – albeit one that’s shaped like a large, thin calculator. One of the advantages of the traditional book is that if dropped or bumped it generally won’t suffer much damage other than some minor scuffing or bent pages, but the same can’t be really said for the beautifully-crafted Kindle.
What that means is that, as with every expensive piece of gadgetry, protection is paramount! Luckily there are lots of Kindle covers on the market to keep your Reader tucked up safe, so wherever you are – whether you’re tucked up too, or out and about in the great wild world – you’ll have peace of mind.
My favourites are the Kindle cases which also feature a built-in light, giving you some illumination when using the Reader in dim light. Whilst the official Amazon Kindle Lighted Leather Cover will set you back by a hefty chunk of cash, our alternative faux-leather case clocks in at a much more reasonable price.

You won’t lose out on function or protection either: the Kindle case itself is fashioned from durable faux-leather, giving it a stylish and professional appearance. It’s held shut by a sturdy strap, for extra security, and a soft grey microsuede interior prevents scrapes and scratches. The specially-designed Kindle light is easily stored when not in use in a light pocket situated behind the Kindle, which is positioned so as not to interfere with the device’s usability. It features a powerful LED light bulb, so there’s easily enough illumination to see the eReader’s screen without straining your eyes.
Amazon Kindle Gift Pack
I also like the Kindle Gift Pack, which makes an ideal present for bookworms (Mother’s Day, anyone?) and contains all the extras you need for your Kindle in one:
Book-style case with faux-leather exterior, internal padding & interior microfibres
Alternative silicone Kindle skin for when you don’t require as much protection
Five Kindle screen protectors
Kindle reading light for those dim days and dark nights
In-car Kindle charger for power wherever you are
