Weekly Round-Up

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

Here’s my weekly round-up of news tips from us – as usual, if there’s something you want to know more about then just drop me an email.

A fabulous array of new SIM free handsets have come into stock here this week – we’ve got the SIM free HTC 7 Pro for £459.95, the SIM free Optimus 7 for £389.95, the SIM free Samsung Optium 7 for £484.95 and the SIM free Nexus S for £479.95.

If you’re an iPhone 4 user who wants to avoid cutting your standard SIM down to size, the Micro SIM adapter and stand case for iPhone 4 might be of interest.  This is a way to let you continue using your standard SIM in the iPhone 4 without having to cut your SIM down to MicroSIM size.  It looks a bit fiddly to me, but could be very useful for people who switch between different phones regularly? Let me know whether you think it’s a good idea or not!

We’ve just got in the iChair for iPhone 4 and iChair for iPad, too. These slim-fitting cases with a kickstand which will let you prop your device up either horizontally or vertically, making it easy to watch videos and look at photos hands-free and comfortably. These look pretty good for terrible telly-addicts like me who like to catch up on their TV on the train (Is anyone else watching the new series of Being Human? OMG).

For those who prefer Android to Apple, the HTC Desire HD Case with Kickstand does the same job as the iChair but for the Desire HD.

Something pretty nifty for gaming addicts that’s coming soon are Thumbies for the iPod/ iPhone, which are little round friction pads which you stick onto the screen of your iPod or iPhone.  They use heat-pad technology to take gaming to a new level, creating external gaming controls which give you a better feel and experience.  As ever, there are loads of gadgets for gamers available over at our sister site www.gamingzap.com

Until next week!

BoxWave iPhone 4 Keyboard Case

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

iPhone 4 Keyboard cases are like buses – you don’t see one for ages then five come along at once!

Over the last few weeks we’ve managed to secure several iPhone 4 Cases with a built in Bluetooth Keyboard with the latest one, the BoxWave Keyboard Case arriving just this week.

The BoxWave case is a polycarbonate shell that has a slide out keyboard built into it. I’ve tried each of the iPhone 4 Keyboard cases and have to say that this is by far the easiest one to use. When you want to use the keyboard, you just slide it down and start using it.

BoxWave Keyboard Case can be used easily in your hands

By comparison, the TypeTop and TypeType are secured on the inside of a book style leather case. This makes holding it somewhat awkward and most easily used when you can rest it on a desk or flat surface.

TypeTop Bluetooth Mini Keyboard Case works best on flat surface

The keys are pretty well spaced and are slightly larger than the on-screen keyboard, although accessing the numerical keys on the top row can be a little bit fiddly.

The keyboard and cover have cut outs that still allow you access to the volume controls, sleep switch, dock connector and camera/flash.

The keyboard is powered by it’s own internal battery and will last you weeks on a single charge. My only slight gripe with it is that it uses a different charger (Mini USB) to the iPhone 4, so if you spend a lot of time travelling, you’ll need to remember to pack two separate chargers.

The BoxWave keyboard Case for iPhone 4 is due back into stock this week. Demand is expected to be high, so if you want one, I’d place your order now and we’ll ship it out on the same day that we received them from our suppliers.

Protect your Nokia N8 with the OtterBox Commuter

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

The N8 is Nokia’s latest touch screen smart phone to take on the iPhone and no end of Android Smartphones. While it’s not really winning the battle, it’s still a great smartphone. It offers most, if not all of the features of most of its competitors but for a much lower price, as well as it’s own app store and a familiar menu system.

If you’ve got one, you’ll want to keep it looking at it’s best for as long as you can. A case is the obvious way to do that, but with so many N8 Cases available, choosing the right one can be a bit of a mission. I’ve been playing with some of our most popular N8 cases over the last few days to find the best one.

As expected, the OtterBox Commuter for the N8 came out on top. It’s a strong, multi-layered case that does a great job of keeping your N8 safe.

OtterBox For Nokia N8 Commuter Series

OtterBox Commuter - Nokia N8 - Front

The OtterBox Commuter consists of two parts; a tough, thin film to protect the screen and a tough polycarbonate shell. The corners of the case are made from silicone and help to absorb the energy when you drop it and divert it away from your phone.

It’s not quite as tough as the OtterBox Defender range, but that’s not a bad thing. The Defender cases tend to be extremely bulky and can restrict access to parts of the phone. The commuter series don’t have this problem. They maintain a slim profile on your phone and all ports and connections are still accessible through silicone plugs.

More Power for your Smart Phone with an Extended Battery

Monday, February 7th, 2011

Smart phones like the HTC Desire HD and the Samsung Galaxy S are great, but the battery life on them can be a bit disappointing. Keeping a car or USB charger with you is one way to keep your phone going for longer, but only if you’re near a power source. What do you do if you’re out and about all day? The simple answer is to invest in an extended battery.

Not all extended batteries are the same though. Some will fit into your phone without adding any extra bulk, where as others are physically larger and come with a replacement back cover for your phone. In the last couple of weeks, three of the biggest names in batteries have released a Galaxy S Extended Battery, a HTC Desire HD Extended battery and a Google Nexus S Extended Battery.

Galaxy S Extended Battery

The Galaxy S Extended Battery is larger than the standard one that comes with the phone. This means that in order for it to fit you’ll need to fit an alternative back cover to your phone. Although this does increase the size of your Galaxy S, it’s not by much and the cover incorporates a handy kick stand that’s ideal for watching films or videos with.

In terms of battery life, the Momax EX Power for the Galaxy S offers 2700mAh compared to just 1500mAh on the standard battery. This means you’ll get almost twice as much life from your phone before you’ll need to recharge it.

HTC Desire HD Extended Battery

The extended battery for the Desire HD may not be packing as many mAh’s as the one for the Galaxy S, but it still gives a significant boost over the standard battery and most importantly, it does it without increasing the size of the phone.

Mugen HTC Desire HD Battery Extended Battery - 1300mAh

The Mugen Extended battery is no bigger than the standard one that comes in the box, allowing you to use the original back cover.

Google Nexus S Extended Battery

Again, the extended battery doesn’t have a capacity much higher than the original, but it’s still enough to get even the heaviest of users through the day. Like the Mugen battery, the Seidio Extended battery for the Nexus S doesn’t take up any extra space and can be used with your existing back cover.

To find an extended battery for your phone, head over to Batteries page and select your phone from the drop down menu on the left hand side of the page.
