New Sim Free Arrivals – HTC 7 Pro and Motorola Defy

Monday, January 31st, 2011

It’s been a while since any major new sim free phones were launched so I’m quite excited to see two pretty big handsets arrive this week.

First up is the HTC 7 Pro, a Windows Phone 7 smart phone with full Qwerty keyboard, and the other is the dust and water resistant Motorola Defy.

HTC 7 Pro

The HTC 7 Pro is essentially a HTC HD7, but with a smaller screen and a full, slide out qwerty keyboard. Processor speed, camera resolution and memory are all the same, only the dimensions are different. The HTC 7 Pro is a powerful phone that is designed for those that spend a lot of time emailing or writing out reports.

The keyboard is well spaced and makes typing considerably more accurate while freeing up valuable space on your screen.

Motorola Defy

The Defy is the latest Android running handset from Motorola, but instead of being ‘just another smart phone’, Motorola have added a few features that really make it stand out from the crowd – the main one being that the phone is dust and water resistant.

This will no doubt appeal to any one who works in a dusty/wet environment, but also anyone who’s a bit of a party animal and forever spilling drinks on their phone!

Other impressive features are a 3.7″ screen, dual microphones for noise cancellation, 5mp camera with flash, Internet browser with Flash support and support for DLNA (What is DLNA).

Both handsets are in stock and available now.

Quick Look: HTC Media Link

Monday, January 31st, 2011

HTC are having a great time at the moment. It seems like every handset they launch is a winner, with the HTC Desire and HTC Desire HD proving to be incredibly popular.

Both versions of the Desire are great for both taking and looking at photos, recording videos and watching movies, but what if you want to watch your content on your HDTV at home?

The traditional way of doing it would be to transfer your media to your Mac/PC and then burn your video to dvd to play it back, but that’s such a long winded and slow process no-one really bothers.

Thankfully though, technology has moved on and HTC have brought out their tiny Media Link DLNA adapter that allows you to stream music, pictures and videos from your phone to your TV wirelessly. What’s more, as DNLA is a fairly common standard, it will also work with most other brands of phone that support DLNA as well as a number of laptops and cameras, although compatibility will vary from device to device.

If you’ve never come across the term DLNA before, you might want to have a quick look at our post on What Is DLNA? as this explains what it is and why you’ll want it!

HTC Media Link DLNA Adaptor

Footprint is not much bigger than a bank card

In a way, the Media link adapter is similar to the latest Apple TV. It allows you to play content from around your house or from your phone, without having to mess around with plugging your gadgets into your TV. Simply power it up, connect it via HDMI to your TV and away you go. There’s no support for streaming from websites, not yet anyway, but as the HTC Media Link is running Android it might appear in a future update.

The HTC Media link connects quickly and easily to your existing wireless network, and all the set up is done through your PC. All you need to know is the name of your network and the password and you’ll be up and running in less than 5 minutes. All you need to do then is make sure your phone is on the same network, launch the Connected Media app, find the photos, videos or music you want to play back and hit play. Your content will then be displayed on the screen.

Engadget recently reviewed the HTC Media Link, here’s a quick video from them testing it out with the HTC Desire Z.

You can read their full review of the Media Link on the Engadget site. For more details, head over to the HTC Media Link product page.

Use your iPad for longer with the iPad Charging Case and Solar Case

Monday, January 31st, 2011

Battery life on the iPad is pretty impressive, it out performs just about any other tablet on the market and even puts the iPhone 4 to shame. But for some power users, this still might not be enough – especially if you use your iPad at work or on the road. If you do need more from your iPad then take a look at our latest arrival, the iPad Charging Leather Case.

iPad Charging Leather Case

iPad Charging Leather Case

This leather case features a built in 6600mAh battery that will almost double the battery life on your iPad. What’s really great about it though is that it doesn’t add much extra bulk compared to a standard leather case.

iPad Charging Case - Simple to Fit

Simple to Fit

Your iPad slides into a pocket in the case and is secured by folding the top flap back in – no zips, clips or other awkward fastenings. On the base of the case is a display that shows you how fully charged the case is, along with the same 30 pin dock connector that you’ll find on the iPad. This makes charging really easy as you can use your existing iPad charger with the case and can charge it from the mains, car or PC/Mac.

The case is lightly padded to protect against minor knocks and bumps. It has a soft leather lining too so you don’t need to worry about it getting scratched or damaged while it’s in the case.

On the inside of the cover are a series of leather strips that act as a support, allowing you to use the case as a desktop stand for watching photos or videos back.

The iPad Charging Leather Case is available to order now, but if it’s not really your thing, take a look at the Solar Powered iPad Case from our sister site GearZap.com.

iPad Solar Powered Charging Case

The idea behind it is pretty similar, it will charge your iPad while it’s in the case or act as a back up battery should your iPad run out of juice, but instead of relying on mains power, it has a large solar panel on the front that uses light to charge it’s own internal battery which can then be used to charge your iPad – or any other device that supports USB charging (providing you have the cable).

Unlike some solar cases, this one will charge in any lit room. It doesn’t have to be in direct sunlight and will even charge while it’s sat on your desk next to you.

The case itself is made from a high quality leather and features a built in stand so that you can prop it up for watching back your photos and movies.

The Solar Powered iPad Case and a wide range of other iPad accessories are available now from GearZap.com

Introducing the Galaxy Tab Keyboard Case

Monday, January 31st, 2011

Our iPad Keyboard case is incredibly popular and we’re getting no end of customers asking us if there will ever be a version for the Samsung Galaxy Tab. Well we have some great news, the answer is yes and the Galaxy Tab Keyboard Case is available now!

Galaxy Tab Keyboard Case

Full QWERTY Bluetooth Keyboard

The style of the case is slightly different due to it’s smaller size, but it still manages to pack in a full QWERTY Bluetooth keyboard and a stand. Your Tab is held in place securely by a stitched pocket that keeps all buttons and keys accessible, and cut outs on the back mean you can still use the camera without having to remove the case. The screen isn’t covered and will work as normal, although you may want to invest in a Galaxy Tab Screen Protector to stop it from getting scratched and scuffed.

Galaxy Tab Keyboard Case

Built in Stand makes typing quick and easy

The keyboard has impressive battery life and will provide around 90 hours of use or 100 days of standby time from a single charge. On the back of the case is a built in kickstand that will support your Tab and hold it at just the right angle for typing emails, browsing the internet and watching films.

The Galaxy Tab Keyboard Case is in stock and available to order now.

Weekly News Round-Up

Friday, January 28th, 2011

Here I am again with this week’s low-down on what’s been happening over in the Mobile Fun offices!

These gloves for capacitive touch screens by Dot have been selling like hot cakes over the cold months, and continue to do well as the weather stays chilly. Pretty simple concept – silicone fingertips mean the screen will still recognise your touch – but make a big difference when you’re out & about.

One gadget that’s brought out the child in us this week is the BeeWi Mini Cooper S Bluetooth Controlled Car, which lets you use your Android or Symbian mobile phone to control and steer a cool 1:20 replica of a Mini Cooper S.  Just pair your phone to the car like a normal Bluetooth device, fire up the app & it’ll provide you with hours of fun – unless you’re an iPhone user, that is!

We’re pleased to report that the SIM free HTC 7 Pro is on its way and due to arrive at the beginning of February (between the 3rd & the 10th).  It’s available for pre-order now, and we expect it to prove very popular with people who need to do a lot of typing and prefer a physical QWERTY keyboard. Plenty of HTC 7 Pro accessories available on the main site, too.

The Momax EXPower replacement battery for Samsung Galaxy S can provide Galaxy S users with extra power, as it contains 2700mAh’s of power compared to the original Galaxy S battery’s 1500mAh. Great stuff! It also comes with a replacement back for the phone which features a handy kick-stand, making watching videos easier and more comfortable.

Have a great weekend!
MF Nat
