Hands on Review of the iPhone 3G Car Pack

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

Since the launch of Sat Nav on the iPhone earlier this year, the number of in-car holders for the iPhone has grown significantly and with so many available, I decided to go hands on with one of the latest car holders for the iPhone 3G & 3GS – the iPhone Car Pack – to see what makes this one different from the rest.

iPhone 3G Car Pack

iPhone 3G Car Pack

The Car Pack is made up of 3 items – a suction mount, a cradle for your iPhone and a car charger and putting it together takes just a few seconds.

Mouting it on your windscreen is quick and easy too. The suction mount is solid and unlike some cheap suction holders, doesn’t need to be moistened to stick to the windscreen and once it’s attached the only way to remove it is to release the clamp. The clamp itself is a lot easier to use than you’d expect too.  Normally, suction mounts have a small plastic lever that doesn’t seem to move very much and as a result it doesn’t create much suction to hold the cradle in place – that’s not the case with the Car Pack though, the level moves a considerable amount, which provides plenty of suction to keep your holder in place.

Strong suction mount and a locking arm prevent unwanted movement

Once it’s attached to the windscreen, you’ll need to adjust the angle of the holder to suit your driving position. This is done easily enough as the cradle can be adjusted in 3 ways. Depending on which way up you’ve attached it to the windscreen, you can adjust it up/down, left/right and the cradle can rotate through 360°. While it’s easy enough to adjust, it’s not really something that you can do once you’ve started driving, so I’d make sure that you’re happy with the position before you set off – the reason I say that is the up/down and left/right joints are locked in place and to adjust them you need to press a button and then rotate it – something that really needs two hands.

Push the button to rotate the arm
Push the button to rotate the arm

The Cradle that you slide your phone does a great job too.  You slide your phone in from the top, and once inserted, a spring loaded clip moves into place to prevent the phone from falling out – (more useful for when the phone is being used in landscape mode).

Overall it’s a great holder. I’ve tried many different car holders over the years, but can happily say the iPhone Car Pack is one of the most solid I’ve ever used.  The locking arm means that once set, it’s not going to keep moving around or start to drop every time you go over a bump in the road.

My rating: 9/10

Top 5 HTC Touch Pro2 Cases

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

The HTC Touch Pro2 has changed considerably compared to the original HTC Touch Pro, so if you’re upgrading to the Touch Prod2 not all of your accessories are going to work with it. Although the handset has put on a bit of weight, it’s mostly for the better as the screen is now a much more user friendly 3.6″ compared to 2.8″ on the original Touch Pro, the screen resolution has been increased, and it’s now got a more powerful battery.

With the Touch Pro2 working so hard to keep you in touch with the world and your life in order, you’re going to need a way to keep your phone safe and protected. Mobile Phone Cases come in all shapes and sizes – from Premium Leather Cases through to the everyday leather, plastic and silicone cases, but with such a wide range available finding a case to match your needs can be a bit overwhelming, so I’ve put together a list of our top 5 cases for the HTC Touch Pro2.

You’ll probably notice that all of the cases here (with the exception of the InvisibleSHIELD) don’t allow you to use the phone while it’s in the case. The reason behind it is that the sliding mechanism on the Touch Pro2 makes it very tricky to create a case that fits the phone well and doesn’t interfere with it’s use. The Krusell Orbit Flex does a pretty good job, but gets very mixed reviews, so for that reason I’ve stuck to carry cases in my top 5.

1. Noreve Traditional Leather Case for HTC Touch Pro 2

The Noreve Case for the HTC Touch Pro2 is an elegant case made from top quality handcrafted leather. The case features cut-outs for the headphone jack and charger. It also has a cut out at the bottom to make removing your Touch Pro quick and easy.

2. InvisibleSHIELD for HTC Touch Pro2

This isn’t strictly speaking a case, but it’s the best way of keeping your phone safe against scratches and drops if you don’t want to keep taking your phone out of a case every time you want to use it. They’re made of a thin, tough plastic that sticks to all parts of your phone and can withstand almost anything you can throw at it. Obviously if you drop your phone it’s not going to do much to cushion the impact, but it will prevent the corners from getting scratched and it will keep your screen looking like new.

3. PDair Leather Pouch for HTC Touch Pro2

PDair cases are a range of elegant, hand stitched leather cases designed to protect and enhance your Touch Pro2. Each case is hand made from premium leather cuts and is individually designed to give a perfect fit to your phone. PDair cases are available in a range of styles to suit all tastes, but this is by far the most popular for the Touch Pro2. It has cut-outs for your charger and headphones, as well as a hole on the bottom to help you to get your phone out quickly.

4. PDair Vertical Case for HTC Touch Pro2

This case is made in the same way as the one above, but is a pouch that you slide your Touch Pro2 in to. It leaves the charger and handsfree ports accessible, but you’ll need to remove the phone from the case in order to use it. Due to high demand for PDair cases availability is often limited, so if we’re showing as having either of these cases in stock you’ll need to order one quickly as they can sometimes take weeks to come back into stock!

5. Piel Frama Leather Case for HTC Touch Pro2

Slightly different this one. All Piel Frama cases are hand made from premium leather and designed specifically for each handset, but in the case of the Touch Pro2 it’s designed so that you can use the phone in the case for anything that uses the touch screen, but if you want to use the keyboard you’ll need to remove it from the case. As well as protecting your phone, the Piel Frama cases have storage space for Bank/Credit cards and cut outs that allow you to use your headphones and charger while your phone is in the case.

Jabra Halo Competition – Winner Announced

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

Last month Mobile Fun teamed up with Jabra to give away a Jabra Halo Stereo Bluetooth Headset worth £69.95 – all you had to do was write a review on one of the products on the Mobile Fun website.

Jabra Halo Stereo Bluetooth Headset

Jabra Halo Stereo Bluetooth Headset

We’ve been through all of the entries we received and can now reveal that the lucky winner of the Jabra Halo Bluetooth Headset is Mark Plested who wrote the following review on the Seidio Innocase II for the iPhone 3G & 3GS:

“For all the people who have bought cases for their iPhones and think that the case does not do the phone justice, well here is a case for you. At last a case that not only protects your phone but aslo makes the phone look even better, the way you can see the Apple logo , not hidden like all the other cases, the feel of the case is very classy. You also get a holder for the case which the phone sits snuggly in-ward facing protecting the screen. The belt is strong, secure and very durable. All in all a superb case thats does the iPhone justice. Well worth the price.”

I spoke to Mark earlier on today and he said “I am very surprised and delighted to win this excellent product.”

So congratulations again to Mark – your Jabra Halo is on the way to you today!

Top 10 Nokia E71 Cases

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

If you’ve got yourself a powerful smart phone such as the Nokia E71, chances are that you’re going to be using it heavily during your working day for appointments, calls and emails. With the phone working so hard to keep you in touch with the world and your life in order, you’re going to need a way to keep your phone safe and protected.

Mobile Phone Cases come in all shapes and sizes – from Premium Leather Cases through to the everyday leather, plastic and silicone cases. With such a great range available finding a case to match your needs can be a bit overwhelming, so I’ve put together a list of our top 10 cases for the Nokia E71.

1. FlexiShield Skin Plus – Nokia E71

If you’re not one for leather cases, or you want a case that is a bit more practical then a FlexiShield Skin will probably suit you better. FlexiShield Skins for the Nokia E71 are thicker and tougher than standard Silicone Cases and will certainly give your phone more bounce if you drop it! It has a non slip feel to it and covers all of the back of the handset, leaving the camera free for you to take your photos. The FlexiShield Plus also includes a Nokia E71 screen protector to stop your screen from getting scratched.

2. Nokia CP-277 – E71 Carry Case

The CP-277 Carry Case has been designed by Nokia to work perfectly with the Nokia E71. It’s a hard leather carry pouch that holds your phone securely and protects both the screen and keypad. The case is well suited to people who carry their phones around in their bag or pocket.

3. Nokia CP-360  - E71 Carry Case

The CP-360 is a hard leather case that’s made specifically for the E71. It holds the phone securely and leaves the keypad and screen fully accessible. There’s no bulky belt clip on the back so it’s perfect if you want to carry it in a bag or pocket.  It has a folding design that makes it easy to insert or remove your phone.

4. OtterBox Impact for Nokia E71

While it’s not quite as heavy duty as the OtterBox defender, the OtterBox Impact still provides high levels of protection when you drop your Nokia E71. The Impact series case is a silicon skin that covers the back and corners of your phone, but leaves the volume controls, keypad and headphone socket easily accessible. It has extra padding on the internal corners that will absorb impact energy and divert it away from your phone. Your screen isn’t covered though, so you’ll need to invest in a Nokia E71 Screen Protector.

5. Nokia E71 Krusell Classic Case

If you work in the building trade or in a dusty environment, then this is the case for you. It completely covers all of your phone and is secured with a unique zip fastening only found on Krusell cases. It prevents dust from getting trapped under the screen of your phone and fully protects the case of your phone from getting dented or scratched when you drop it. The back of the case folds down to reveal the camera. As with every Krusell case, it’s compatible with the full range of Multidapt clips and holders, so finding a mounting option to suit your needs shouldn’t be a problem.

6. Nokia E71 InvisibleShield

The InvisibleSHIELD is more than just a screen protector. Not only does it cover the front screen of your Nokia E71, it also includes the same tough protective film for the back of your phone. Installation takes a little bit longer than a normal screen protector, but the end result is well worth it. It covers almost all of your phone (not the keyboard) and will withstand the toughest of scrapes. The InvisibleSHIELD has a matte finish with a non slip feel to it. It is great at repelling fingerprints and reducing reflections. As the InvisibleSHIELD doesn’t add any extra bulk to your phone, you can use in in conjuction with most Nokia E71 Cases and Skins.

9. Beyza Slimline Leather Case

Beyza cases are slim, leather pockets for your phone that add very little bulk to your phone. They’re made from genuine leather and have a soft felt lining that cleans your phone everytime you slide your phone in and out. As they have quite a neat fit to your phone, the Beyza cases have a cut out at the base that helps you to push your phone out of the case. It’s designed to be carried in your bag or pocket and doesn’t have a belt clip or belt loop.

10. Silicone Case – Nokia E71

As the name suggests, Silicone Cases are made from a soft flexible Silicone gel that covers almost all of your Nokia E71. The only parts left exposed are the screen and keypad, so you might want to invest in a screen protector to prevent scratches. Silicone cases add very little to your phone in the way of bulk or weight, and are a great way to protect your phone against minor knocks and scrapes.
